At the outbreak of the war, Dieter is working as a waiter in the Grand Hotel. He is in love with Kitty and wants to spend his life with her, but with his country at war with hers, and Germans no longer welcome in Folkestone, this won’t be easy.
Dieter has no choice but to live in secret. He leaves Folkestone and finds a place in Devon where he hopes he can stay hidden while the war rumbles on.
