LARWOOD, Harold

Sport - Cricket

Harold Larwood was born in Nuncargate. A bowler of great speed combined with considerable control, it made him a force to be reckoned with in the years between 1926 and 1933. He was a hard hitting and successful batsman, making 98 against Australia in the final test in 1933. Although not a large man, his superb action allowed him to bowl in excess of 90 mph.

Key Achievements: Bodyline (1933); The Larwood Story (1965).

LAWRENCE, D.H.

Writer

Lawrence is undoubtedly one of the most important English writers of the 20th century. He was the fourth child of an illiterate coal miner and an educated mother from Victoria Street, Eastwood. He wrote everything from novels and novellas to short stories, poetry, literary criticism, philosophical and travel essays.

Key Achievements: Sons and Lovers (1913), The Rainbow (1915), and Women in Love (1920).

LEE, Alvin

Music - Lead guitarist

Alvin Lee was born 19 December, 1944 in Nottingham and began playing guitar in local bands at the age of 13. Two years later he and Leo Lyons had formed the core of the band that was to become Ten Years After. Lee is a lead guitarist, lead singer and primary songwriter. Super-stardom followed the film release in 1970 of the Woodstock Festival. In 1974 he released "In Flight", recorded live on stage in London. He went solo in the late eighties.

Key Achievements: Woodstock (1970); On The Road To Freedom (1973); In Flight (1975); Let it Rock (1978); FreeFall (1980); Rockspective (1993).

Robert Lindsay

LINDSAY, Robert

Entertainment - Actor

Robert Lindsay was born and grew up in Ilkeston. He is still an avid supporter of Ilkeston Town FC. He began his working life as a dialect coach with a repertory company before moving to the West End to begin his life infront of the screen. He became a household name as Wolfie in the 1977 sitcom Citizen Smith. He has appeared in numerous TV series (Oliver Twist, Horatio Hornblower, Jake's Progress, GBH...) feature films (Divorcing Jack, Fierce Creatures...) and stage productions (Me and My Girl, Beckett, Richard III, Oliver!...). He is recognised as an outstanding British actor.

Key Achievements: Winner - Best Actor, British Academy Awards, GBH, 1992. Nominated - Best Actor, Jake's Progress, 1996.
