Is Nottingham the best city in the Country?

Having recently
read the comments written on this subject, I would like to add my
own points of view about whether or not Nottingham is the best city?
At one time, I would have definitely said ' NO WAY!' It's a depressing
dump. I worked for a major retail company for many years in Nottingham
and did not enjoy the city in which I worked and played at that
time.
In 1996, I left the U.K and moved to Sydney, Australia for 2 years
coming back at the beginning of 1998. Albeit you can not draw any
type of comparisons between Sydney and Nottingham, I was impressed
upon my return to see what developments had erupted in such a short
space of time. It was incredible. On my first visit to Nottingham,
I could not believe my eyes when seeing what vast improvements had
been made and continuing to be made. The shopping was fantastic.
The Victoria Centre, having received it’s new image, was
spot on, big bonus to have had the inclusion of The House of Fraser.
The nightlife and atmosphere had been totally thunderballed. The
pubs were trendier, people seemed to have adopted a more confident
attitude towards themselves and each other.
It somehow felt alive with an energy to which it had been lacking
on a major scale for many years.
I felt that a more cosmopolitan feel had come over it and that an
effort was being made in order to restore and regenerate not only
new business, but to revitalise existing concerns.
The Arena, to which I had my first visit to on Saturday the 10th
Feb, (Texas in concert) was mind blowing. The whole event was organised
efficiently and professionally. I believe that this addition will
have a huge effect on the way that Nottingham will become placed
on the grand scale of things. It’s already got one of
the best reputations for nightlife although there are people of
the Nation that say Nottingham is the one of worst cities in the
world for trouble. Has anyone tried Newark recently??
I visited a friend of mine recently who left Nottingham several
months ago to take up residence in London. He is now wishing to
return to Nottingham Uni with a hope of making a better future.
After visiting him to see how life was treating him on the South
side, I discovered that I can honestly say I was pleased to be back
in my neck of the woods.
I’d like to wish him all the good luck in the world, as
he is looking forward to a life back in the East Midlands.
I’m not saying that Nottingham doesn’t have
it’s bad side, of course it does, but I think that were
lucky to have a city that is actively trying to improve itself in
such a big stylie way. The only downfall to all this, is that with
there now being so many places to eat, drink and generally entertain
yourself, it leaves one very confused as to choice of venue, plus
the pocket is always taking a severe bashing.
Therefore I feel that there is a necessity for larger incentives
to be provided to faithful Notts Pats who sing it’s praises.
Keep it up Notts and be proud of what's being accomplished.
So, I can only conclude that anyone who is not satisfied with Nottingham
as being a good place to live, should leave, return and then see
if they alter their opinions. It did mine.

I'd just like to say a big hello to Eve (whose comments are
posted further up the page) We worked in the same office in County
Hall together in the summer last year and she certainly made my
time there a whole lot more fun. Cheers Yvette!! (she's going to
kill me).

Oliver Haywood...did
you used to work at County Hall? How the bloody hell are you? I
used to send you dodgy emails about my flatmate having a huge crushon
you. Uh oh, not that makes me sound like a total weirdo. Anyway,
I hope London finds you well. Speaking of Nottingham. I've lived
here all my life but have visited many other cities. I can only
say that Nottingham is truly outstanding. Its got a little something
for everyone. Yes, I agree with the comment about Trent FM being
sh**e, but we have some great pirate stations. Now, places like
the Cornerhouse, the Lace Market and the Canal side are really booming,
I can't imagine why anyone would want to live anywere else.

I must agree
with the earlier comments of eddie, from nottingham. i have lived
in all my life Nottingham and never saw its real potential until
my current partner, who had been away in Leeds for couple of years,
told me how much he had missed the city. this made me open my eyes
and look around. This city has alot to offer potential tourists,
students and companies. Not only with the history of the castle
and Robin Hood but with other land marks. What about Wollaton Hall,
Newstead Abbey, and the history of DH Lawrence. Not to mention Jesse
Boot and other famous Nottinghamers (excuse the expression) including
Golf star Lee Westwood. I am not saying that i think Nottingham
should be awash with tourists but i cant understand why the local
government has failed to notice the history this city has to offer.
People come for Robin Hood and thats all they get. Why cant we show
them what else Notts has to offer? As for the beggers, which every
city, yes Martin from Arboreutum even Leeds, have problems with.
What can be done? More centres? I am not sure they are helping as
it is. I have never found beggers to be violent but maybe thats
just me. And how you can compare our city with Liverpool is above
and beyond me. Nottinghams night life is spectacular and i feel
can be compared with the best. The bars are close together unlike
that of London and are usually problem free. What about Media and
such clubs? I am also wondering about the battle of Drugs in Nottingham?
Is anything being done to help? Instead of worrying aabout the chewing
gum on the streets shouldnt we be finally facing this problem? Nottingham
isnt the only city with this problem. On the whole I think Notts
is a great place to live like any fast paced city it has its problems.
The idea now is to work on fixing them.

Wow you people!!!
My name is Tony Hadley (and before you ask... no not that one) and
after reading your views i thought i just had to make a comment.
Mr Crossland, i can't say that i've heard of you... plans for world
domination still on the drawing board are they son???? at least
you have something positive to say about the city... Mr Masters,
was it really the city that did that to you? i doubt it somehow,
a bad workman always blames the city he lives in???

I agree with
the many comments from people saying that it is only once you have
moved away from Nottingham, that you begin to realise just how wonderful
a place it is. Like so many things in life, it requires a bit of
perspective to appreciate the bigger picture. I moved away from
Nottingham at the end of last summer, having moved to the City with
my girlfriend 2 years previously. My new job in London is great,
but not for me, and I am hoping to return to Nottingham this summer.
For good. Anyone who hasn't been there should go, those who are
there should just be happy at what a great place they live in!

i was born there. the blue plaques will be out in force when i die,

Only 4 months
ago, I left Nottingham for the first time to go to university, it's
only now that I realise how great Nottingham really is, especially
for shopping. Although, I wouldn't say it's the best city, the beggars
and big issue sellers still really annoy me, but you get this even
in nice towns like Winchester. I think they could still do a lot
more with Nottingham, there must be more we can do with Robin Hood,
and if they just tidy up the streets and get rid of a few pigeons,
I'll be happy.

Does anybody
from the local parliment read or understand the issues that are
raised by their own constituents? People here are quite happy to
say how great Notts is except for 1. the dirt 2. the beggars 3.
the licensing laws.
If you expect
pants, you get pants. Don;t be so self congratulatory (that includes
the self delushionists who haven't live here for years (was it ever
that great?))
Notts needs
to get it's act together to consider itself a top ten city.
Whether it's
a case of woods and tree but what many consider to be the best facets
of the city are actually destroying it (ie Market Square and the
Victoria Centre) get out there and see how it should be done (Leeds
and Manchester prime examples)

Keep your shirt
on...I really think that you need a holiday.
Have you ever
thought that its the constituants that give Nottingham(The WORLD
RENOWNED) city, a bad name. Do you smoke? ever threw your ash out
the car window...? Do you chew Chewing gum?...ever throw it on the
floor?
DO YOU RECYCLE!!...I
do agree with you that the Councils need an affirmative action approach...Clean
up the streets yada yada yada ...
The people need
to affirm in thier own minds, not to do all of the above....so...when
you have shot all the pidgeons,
put some clothes on the girls, brought back Robin Hood,
closed Teasers, eradicated Vadalism and Graffiti, etc etc etc
Then maybe
you have a case...until then...
PS..NOTTS IS
A TOP TOP CITY. RESPECT IT OR MOVE ON..

I had the chance
to study some years ago in Nottingham, and I must say that these
years stay in my memory as one of the best time of my life...not
only because of the quality of university, but also because of the
super people
in and around Nottingham and the culture/fun/event-possibilities
there. I would return there at once if I could.
By the way -
this is not just old memory, I came to Nottingham at least twice
every year for the last 8 years!
There are always
pro and cons for living in such a town - but be glad that you can
live in such a lively city and enjoy yourself in spite of all problems.

Is Nottingham
the best city in the UK?
I'm afraid to
say I think not. I've lived here for eighteen months now (having
lived in North Wales, Liverpool and Leeds previously).
Nottingham does
have potential for sure, but I am amazed how dirty and grubby the
city is, awash with aggresive beggars. Never have I seen so much
disgusting chewing gum and litter in a town, where is the pride?
The Victoria
Centre is a sixties nightmare, and so shopper un-friendly (why are
there pillars everywhere?).
Also, whilst
there are a number of bars, the clubs and late licences in Notts
are very poor.
Leeds is an
excellent city and a Notts could learn a lot from it. Brilliant
shops, very clean, excellent night life (including past 11pm)forward
looking council that hve really created a 24hr cosmopolitan city.
Come on Notts
are you up to it? Clean your act up.

I was born &
brought up in Nottingahm and lived there for 20-odd years but have
now lived just down the road in Leicester for over a decade.
There is no
doubt that Leicester has a lot more to offer than Nottingham and
I find it a far nicer place to live.
We can offer
the excellent Haymarket theatre and plenty of interesting shopping.
I find the Shires
far nicer to shop in than Nottingham's centres. As we are an integrated
multi-cultural City then there is a far wider diversity of shopping.
We are home
to champions in Football, Cricket, Rugby & Basketball and we
have the largest roller skating rink in the country.
I also find
the people in Leicester a lot more friendly than Nottingham.

Being a Student
at Nottingham Trent I've been here for two years. So far all I've
experienced is diversity to the extreme. This city has it all. Its
got good nightlife people with accents you can understand but also
heritage and countryside beauty. In my opinion it is the 2nd best
city behind London but Nottingham does offer you everything in the
UK in one whole package.

I have lived
in nottingham since 1992. I don't see what the fuss is all about.
The city has a great potential to get rich via tourism , unfortunately
local leaders does not seem to have a clue how to achieve this.
Also there are certain areas that I would not like my daughters
to visit.
Also the clubbing
& nightlife feels like everybody is on the run.
There isn't any place where one can go & enjoy the night without
being disturbed by young thugs.
Friday &
saturday nights are not very interesting for a family , especially
the market square seems to be filled with people who are heavily
drunk & abusive in general.
I can not stand
the twiggy & joe's show on radio trent either.

Nottingham,
is surely the best city in England.
Most people get intothe laid back atmosphere of our city from an
early age. Which may be why the last famous person to be spawned
here was Robin Hood. Oh I`m sorry...I forgot about Paper Lace.
Do you know
any other famous or even imfamous,(Paul Scarrot),sons or daughters
of England`s middle city?

Originally from
Nottingham, for the past five years I have lived in Marbella, Spain,
Kuwait and now am working in Bahrain. When I think of England I
always think of Nottingham. I love the vibrancy of the city, the
fantastic shops and pubs, and the fact that some of the most beautiful
countryside in England is only minutes away. And yes, living in
a desert land I also miss the cold (though not all year). My father
lives in Mapperley and I eagerly await my once yearly visit. Originally
we lived in Farnsfield, and I then moved to the City. A fantastic
place - be proud of it!! PS- you probably wonder what I'm doing
here!! Believe me, one year will be enough although, in Middle Eastern
terms, Bahrain is one of the better countries!!

I lived in Nottingham
for 8 months and enjoyed the city centre and the surrounding countryside.
The people are pleasant and easy-going which is the most important
thing. The nightlife is diverse, I've never seen a better city for
shopping outside London and the Market Square/Lace Market area is
very trendy. But you can't call that shack on the rock a 'castle'!
It's also very cosmopolitan, largely due to having 2 big universities.
I would definitely consider living there in the future and the problems
mentioned are common in most large towns in the UK anyway.

Natalie Earp
Nottingham
in reply...
Natalie do
you ever go down to the grounds of Notts or Forest and see the games
they play, cuz as i read this thing from your saying that we have
no good teams. If you do go down you must be asleep or something
as Notts & Forest are doing great at the moment. Come on, Nottingham
is a great City and it has 2 great Football teams on a roll at the
moment so if you haven't got anything good to say then try not to
say it as i'm sure if you speak to 10'000 Forest fans and 8'000
Notts fans and i'm sure there are more out there that we are proud
of our teams at the moment. So Natalie come back when you have something
good to say okay.

I
quite agree something should be done about the appalling weather.
Suggest the local council gives everyone holiday vouchers to sunny

Nottingham should
definitely do something about the droves of people begging and selling
stuff in the streets. It is a real nuissance that coming to Nottingham
as a tourist I can't stand anywhere in town without being harassed
immediately by someone wanting money from me. I usually answer these
people in German and that puts them off. How about creating some
kind of 'no begging please' symbol. A yellow ribbon would do nicely.
All we would need now is a local newspaper to promote such a ribbon.
I think that the citizens of Nottingham should reclaim their city
centre.

I LOVED the
Indian music the would play out of the radio. I DID NOT LIKE the
rascism displayed by other white people in curry houses etc, on
my street.
Nottingham,
Nottingham, When I moved there I felt cheated that the 'Castle'
was indeed no such thing.
I did not like
the fact that my fellow country people think anything too creative
is 'weird', and how unsupportive they were towards new ideas. I
am very happy to be away from this small mindedness of my fellow
country people.
I have several
things to say to my country: England, stop worrying about what the
Jones are up to down the street, or what so and so's son is up to,
or the local vicar for that matter. Let people be people, let them
be who they are without your judgemental inquisitiveness. Look at
your fear of new things and creative ideas, don't burn them down
in silence and your fears, open up tothem and help them to live
strong!, you may be suprised at how much wild creativity and new
ideas enrich your life.
I also want
to say, England, face up to and apologise to the world for your
Imperialist past, stop talking about 'when we were a great nation'.
No, England was a nation that committed genocide all over the world
and wiped out cultures, events that 'bleed' through history into
problems of today.
Only then will
I be be able to feel a sense of true pride with my nation of birth.
Malcolm
SF USA
and in reply...
Malcolm from the USA seems to have missed the point. The question
is "Is Nottingham the best city in the country"? Not an invitation
to flaP his lip about whatever nonsense's on his mind. I know very
few people who keep going on about Britain being a great nation.
But rest assured, I will correct anyone I hear talking like that.
We really want to be like the wonderful people from the USA, who
have no history of a genocidal nature. Oh, except they raped, pillaged
and murdered their native people. Oh yes, and the fact that they
decided to rape, pillage and murder the people of Vietnam because
they dared to folow a communist ideal. Oh yes, and they murdered
and disfigured millions of Japanese civilians and poisoned their
land for generations. God bless the USA.

Only once you
leave Nottingham do you truly realise what you are missing. Whilst
some benefits of living in another city may be favourable like sunnier
weather or better work oportunities, its once you've left you realise
what you are missing. The 15minute bus journey into town. Shopping
in one area, more clubs and pubs than you can drink in, and whose
mentioned the gangs of girls around market square on a Friday night?
Chips with gravy, curry sauce and mushy peas? Men in white short
sleave shirts all year round. Girls without tights on in winter?
People who talk casually on the top of a bus. The towns a perfect
size smaller than Manchester and Birmimgham but larger than Norwich
or Stoke. Funny i've lived in in London for 15 years but when asked
where i'm from I reply "Nottingham"
