Nottingham is the bomb
The reason why I like Nottingham so much is because the people there
are very friendly, there is a lot of history and the city has grown
tremendously in the last 10 years, with big businesses moving in and
creating more jobs. I have been away from Nottingham for 10 years
and have seen it change, progress and grow. Nottingham is definitely
one of the best up and coming cities around.

Nottingham is Best
Nottingham is fantastic. I moved down here from Scotland 7 years ago
and have no wish to move back. The people are mainly friendly, there
is a good nightlife and loads of shops. The only downside I have noticed
is the huge amount of beggers and big issue sellers. I walked round
Birmingham city centre on Saturday and saw one big issue seller and
one beggar. Why are they so attracted to Nottingham? I can tell you
- Notts people are very generous people and are unfortunatly being
taken for granted!

What's
right with Nottingham
12th March 2002
Surely the question posed is asking those that live in Nottingham
to say how wonderful it is, and those that don't to say how better
their city is? I've lived and visited all around the UK, and the problems
mentioned in Nottingham are just as bad as anywhere else. Nice to
see Leeds mentioned, I was a student there too and yes it was a great
city but it has its problems. Has it changed that in the student area
of LS6, 1 in 3 students can claim to have been burgled, and it still
contains Britains' most burgled street? Or maybe in Essex where a
drugs related stabbing happened outside a friend's house? Or in Bristol
where there is one of the biggest drugs problems in the country. Oxford
has a major drug problem too, so the 'citys for the rich' aren't an
escape either. And wow, somewhere is getting a Harvey Nicols - are
you going to do your shopping there? Instead of silly debates over
my city is better than your city, why not use such forums to appreciate
what is right with Nottingham, what is wrong and what we can do about
it together. Right now Nottingham is an up and coming city. This means
investment and expansion (obviously). And that means we (the people
that live here) can have a say in what this money is going to be spent
on. After all like them or hate them the guys in the council are working
for you and I (although of course they cannot do everything on one
person's wish list). Nottingham city centre has character. Visit the
main shopping area of Southampton or Southend for example and you'll
see what I mean. Yes Nottingham has its ugly sites like the car parks
and 60s architecture, but so do most other places. It also has variety
of shops, which many other town centres lack. Remove all the main
chain stores that everywhere has (the Boots, HMV, M&S, etc) and you
are still left with many curious shops selling household ornaments
to works of art. There are many pubs, restaurants and clubs, from
the chain style to the posh. There are museums, galleries and tourist
attractions. It might not be quite in the same league as parts of
Oxford, Bath or Cantebury, but compare the price of housing and living.
On the other hand Nottingham has a problem with beggars, some legit,
some not. I personally have not found them to be rude, but to some
they may be intimidating. There needs to ways to break the homeless
cycle for the real ones and get them back into society with accommodation
and jobs (and if not jobs, in community service programs - it shouldn't
be seen something just for ex-criminals to pay back their 'debt'.).
The phony beggars need identifying and removing or punishing. Oh and
respect to the guy with the xylophone, he makes me smile (even if
I can't quite work out what he's playing). Nottingham is also very
well located; it's easy to get to Birmingham, Burton, Derby, Sheffield,
Leeds, Loughborough and Leicester. The rail seems reasonable, the
City is alongside the M1, the bus service is fantastic compared to
elsewhere in this country (though has a way to go still). I know there
is teething problems with the changes, and catching buses can be a
little tricky when in town for the first time, but compare it to other
places (outside London). It's cheap, 70p gets you into town. Compare
that to the cost of fuel and parking. You can get home at midnight
(though some of the buses need to be staggered a bit more). Try getting
home in Southampton late at night, no buses, and about a quarter of
the taxis needed, and booking one is no guarantee it will turn up.
Or in parts of Essex where the buses stop at around 7. Nottingham
could however do with quicker, more frequent and cheaper journies
to London (particularly in the commuter hours). Nottingham is a cheap
place to live. Compare the prices on the housing to the south. A three
bed semi-detached house in a good area will set you back 100,000 here.
Southampton you'll be paying nearly twice that. Oxford and London,
I'd hate to even think how much. People are moving here because they
can afford the housing, but not elsewhere further south. In the short
term this isn't good for locals who are looking to first time buy
(up go the house prices), but what it does mean is a pool of skilled
people commuting backwards and forwards. With a bit of investment
and making a few more business parks to attract the IT, science and
financial sector to locate here, these people will stay in Nottingham,
use Nottingham's facilities during the day and provide more income.
I don't know the details of the other end of the spectrum for those
who find it hard to get jobs or just don't have the right qualifications,
but almost everywhere I look there are free computer courses, and
ot! he! r vocational courses. Nottingham is growing in the retail
and services industy, and could grow in the hitech industries too,
just because people will want to move here benefit from a higher standard
of living rather than have to put all their wages into a mortgage.
I was reading today about the teacher problems in London, just because
teachers cannot afford to live there. Many of the other essential
services are the same way. So right now some of the schools might
not be doing too well, but with a little encouragement there will
be a surplus of teachers wanting to locate here. All we need is to
invest a bit more in the schools and work out why some are failing.

Im sorry but I have to agree with max on this one. He is correct about
the figures his states. I read the articles in the Evening Post stating
"Nottingham is now worse than Manchester" for crime. Nottingham also
has the worst schools in the country. You only have to look at the
Ofstead reports. We also have the infamous William Crane school which
offically got the lowest GCSE pass rate in the U.K. We have areas
which are the most deprived parts of the country. Nottingham has also
now overtaken manchester for shootings and stabbings. Hmm now how
many times bigger is Manchester than Nottingham ????? I don't see

NOTTINGHAM-BEST
CITY?
It depends on what you want-the city centre turned into a giant pub/club
with the usual unexciting chain stores thrown in(no thanks) or a city
proud to make the most of its history and heritage- and not just for
tourists.Nottingham has excelled itself on the former but could do
much more on the latter.I don't mean Robin Hood-he is a Notts. not
a Nottingham phenomenon- but,for example, the City used to be so proud
of its Lace. How things change-the Council has just closed its fascinating
Lace museum(which was more than just a museum)because it was losing
money;oh well, let's have another theme pub or club instead.Despite
the odd priorities of the Council, though, there is still much to admire-the
old buildings and elegant streets are still in or near the City Centre, and
not just the Lace Market.Perhaps things won't really improve unless
pressure is put on the City Council by the t! ou! rist and other organisations
keen to keep bringing visitors to the City;it seems from what others
have written here that the Council is too arrogant to listen to residents.
Manchester superior to Nottingham?Come off it-at least it's still
safe to walk in Nottingham's city centre on a Saturday night-can anyone
say the same of Manchester? BARRY-A REGULAR VISITOR TO NOTTINGHAM(UNFORTUNATELY

out that Nottingham is 5 places above Manchester in the crime stakes,
doesn't mean it's true! How do they know the statistics for other
cities? My FACTS come from government statistics and friends who
happen to be policemen in Manchester, who Max, may know slightly

if it was you mark from leeds i have to agree on your earlier posts
about nottingham is one of the most deprived areas in england. but
thats my whole argument, if you look on www.bbc.co.uk/news and look
up crime in nottingham you will find (and yes its stats from the
home office)that nottingham is the first place in england to have
armed police because of the out of controll shootings. but its got
worst a very talented 16 year old lad got shot, plus people got shot
in meadows,st anns, sneinton dale and bestwood estate the week before.
believe me i am not trying to pull down these areas there are still
great people in them but as an old resident from the meadows the
old community spirit has changed and when i revisited exceptionaly
threatened. also as i mentioned earlier the city counsil yes the
actual city counsil addmitted to nottinghams violent reputation.
as for the green bin situation i know its a contravertial statement
but my point is this when there are elections does westbridford
count towards nottingham votes answer no does bramcote etc count
for nottingham city schools answer no does edwalton count in nottingham
cities crime rate answer no but i can understand if people think

James, I'm sorry but it's not the outer city residents of Nottingham
who don't have a clue, it's you! Did I not say that my statistics
came from 'those in the know' (government and police) in relation
to the crime problems being worse in Manchester than Nottingham?
Your evidence came from your local rag! It's funny James because
the Manchester Evening News also state the same sort of claim to
being Britain's 'roughest' city. So who's right and who's not, the
local papers or the government and police? In terms of deprived
areas, NONE of Nottingham's areas are in the top 10 deprivation
'hotspots', whereas 2 of Manchester's are. Manchester is bigger
than Nottingham, but how does that fit into the equation? Crime
figures are measured generally on percentage of population, not
volume. That's why Manchester is now worse than London for shootings,
although I suspect London probably! h! as more, but it's based on
per head of population as I've said. As for schools, I maybe wrong
and I'm not going to dispute your claims on that, although many
schools in Manchester are among the worst in the UK. By the way,
Nottingham is much more than the area governed by the city council,
which is why it's known as 'Greater Nottingham'.

Is
Nottingham Best?
Nottingham is a lovely place, but spoilt by a incompetent City Council.
I wish they would widen the A roads into the City, so that cars could
get out quicker. This would reduce congestion and make the City more
pleasant - without the expense of a tram system which no one will
want to use. The City Council shouldn't dabble in private industry.
They still havent learnt their lesson from Nottingham City Transport
and the Ice Stadium. The problem of course is too much sitting around
tables in meetings, and no one daring to do anything radical incase
they get blamed for it going wrong.

Nottingham - best city
In reply to Max, just because outer suburbs of Nottingham don't fall
within the boundaries of the 'City of Nottingham', doesn't mean that
they are not part of the city area. The greater Nottingham region
is administrated by 4 councils (City, Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe).
Many cities are like this including Liverpool, Manchester, Leicester,
Bristol and Norwich. Also your claim that Nottingham is the most violent
city outside of London is incorrect - Manchester is. They have more
shootings per head of population than ANYWHERE including London. I'm
not denying that Nottingham has a lot of crime, but it's not as bad
as a lot of other cities. You have failing schools too, but every
city does. The worst in the country is also in Manchester, although
these statistics regularly change when OFSTED inspection results are
issued.

PEOPLE
OF NOTTINGHAM
I don't think Nottingham is only the best to place in the country
as I believe that any city in the world is ok but what's stopping
each city in one country from being a nice place to live is most of
people now I've lived in Nottingham all my life and seen quite alot
of changes in my time. Even the People that I've known and grown up
with from school,College and work as some are involved in crime and
drugs while the rest are just plain cold, bitter and twisted for the
sake of it now all visitors, sightseers and tourists may think it's
a nice place to live on the whole but they will have to wait if they
decide to stay or live here for a number of years like I have as anywhere
including is a good place to live but the only advice I would give
to any potential wannabe resident who wants to become a regular in
Nottingham or any other city in the world is keep yourselves to yourselve!
s ! if you want avoid all the tittle tattle and hussle bussle that
goes on as the only hassle you will get from living in a city like
Nottingham is the sometimes hostile atmosphere of hidden prejudices
and bigotry about your lifestyle and not trying to fit in to the illegal
activities and if you don't get involved in them then you will be
intimidated because you want to be different and enjoy change while
these people on the otherhand don't. Also must be made of sterner
stuff with a strong personality when you have to deal with people
who have split personalities that like to stab you in the back in
a two faced sort of way that is often witnessed ironically but let's
say Nottingham is a city like most city that likes to bury their heads
in the sand for visitors who are new to the city just to put on a
show on what they're really like underneath their true colours because
deep down, everything else about this city is swept under the carpet
like the self rightousnes, obnoxiousnes and most of all the categorisation
of watching a person in which they are very good in a very negative
way as the only positivity to come out of a city like Nottingham is
that they never have time to get know anybody properly without sit
in judgement of people and not getting the facts right as I've noticed
that they enjoy alot of idle gossip about people they don't know who
enjoy something which is not against the law without people jumpin!
g ! to conclusions and not having enough proof or evidence to back
up what this person might be doing wrong but apart from all this.
Places like Nottingham aren't always a bowl of cherries on the people
so becareful who you know

Is
Nottingham the best city in the country?
Can anyone help define what is meant by "best" in this context? It
appears to me that this question is a complete non-starter. Nottingham
cannot possibly claim to be the shopping/culture/business capital
of the world but who gives a damn? I'm from Leeds and visited Nottingham
recently, I found it to be an interesting place with much to recommend
it but I'm sure everyone would agree, unless they're hopelessly myopic,
that Nottingham is not very big at all (I'm not trying to cause offence
but it is true) and the shopping facilities are not unique in this
country. There's a lot of nice architecture...and some bloody awful
60's shoddiness just like any other UK city. I find it rather pathetic
that people constantly have to out-do each other over the question
of who has the "best" city (Moo La Rue, do you have an inferiority
complex or something?). Nottingham people should be happy with who
they are and what they feel is special about the city. Comparing cities
is an unfair exercise and is about as mature as an argument between
two babies in a playground. Perhaps a more interesting discussion
would be "Was Robin Hood actually a Yorkshireman?". Respect to the
Notts posse.

VIOLENCE
Violence, you don't not know the meaning of the word. You need to
guage Nottinghams level of street violence with what's happening in
the rest of the world. Living here in Africa you realise the true
value of life. The majority of people living over here do not consider
the next person of any value. So please Nottingham lets remain positive

still visit when I can. Next trip over will be this June (lets hope

You
realise how great Nottingham is when you've lived elsewhere.
Before I lived for a while in rural USA I couldn't wait to get away
from Nottingham. When I got out to the states I realised what Nottingham
has, and how much I missed it. In Nottingham the police are polite,
we are truly allowed to be free. In the states where I was, the police
harassment was unbelievable, I was lied to, intimidated by the local
cops, and I was just a summer worker, the locals went through worse.
A true police state, not free at all like back in blighty. The night
life is amazing in Nottingham, the shops are great, the bus service
is a little confused right now but at least we've got one which usually
works. The late buses home on Fri and Sat are a God-send! The racism
i saw in America made me realise how much of an international and
tolerant city Nottingham is. The beggars are a problem in Nottm, but
as long as you politely say no they are usually fine. The Xylophone
guy rocks though, he's excellent!!! :D There's plenty wrong with Nottingham
but way more thats right with this city. We're constantly improving
and whinging constantly about whats wrong gets you knowhere. If you
don't like it, either leave the city or do something to improve it!

I'm a wannabe University of Nottingham student. What attracted me
to apply was the description of Nottingham as a beautiful place with
lots of greenery and laidback lifestyle although it should be easy
enough to to find entertainment of a more happening sort in the city
as the prospectus says that "Nottingham's a vibrant city". This is
the first that I've heard of beggars being a trademark of Nottingham.
How bad is it really? Is the city as clean as Leicester? I know nothing
of these things but what I read on the Internet mostly. Why is it
that no one mentions the Royal Concert Hall or The Theatre Royal?
Hopefully I will be accepted at the University for the 2002 intake.
Wish me luck, everybody!!

NOTTINGHAM
IS THE BEST
After reading most of the comments from people one thing becomes
apparant. BIRMINGHAM is not a nice place, niether is Derby or Manchester
for that fact. I have been to them all many times.Derby is dirty.
The place is boring however, it is better than Manchester, i mean
you just need to watch Corination Street to see that Manchester
is filled with small industrial streets and ugly high rise flats.
I will not pretend that Nottingham doesn't have high rise flats,it
does but not as many as Birmingham or Manchester. As far as Nottinghamshire
is concerned it has some wonderful country side. Most places above
Nottingham CBD are nasty. I will agree with that. If you want to
see nice Nottingham you need to either go to the city centre CBD
to all the shops and bars etc or to Rushcliffe, South of the river
to the town of West Bridgford and the some of the wolds villages.
These are nic! e ! places where the people don't speak with HORRIBLE
North Nottingham accent, although it is not as repulsive as that
of Birmingham. Nottingham is a city on the move, all you need to
do is drive into Nottingham and see all the new, bright and wonderful
buildings that are emerging amoung the old lace factories that now
are fancy appartments. In other cities this land would remain undeveloped
for years. As for beggars, ignore them, just imagine they are nothing
more than dirt on the street. Nottingham as a super shopping variety
from the local shops to the main highstreet shops such as JOHN LEWIS
and House of Frasier. Nottingham is full of history and interesting
information. Robin Hood, a world wide legend came from Nottingham,
Boots Chemist a world wide chain of shops started in Nottintgham,
Kenneth Clark, MP for Rushcliffe in Nottingham, Nottingham has many
things going for it. It doesn't have the stupid house prices of
the south but doesn't have the old industry and slums of ! no! rth
and north east. It truly is wonderful city which can offer something
to everyone.
Bridegate
West Bridgford, Nottingham
Is Nottm
best
I can't believe the comments made by Bridegate of West Bridgford.
How arrogant to speak of ugly 'North Nottignham' accents, and to
extol the virtues of south notts. What's wrong with the beautiful
countryside around Ashfield and Mansfield, or the Dukeries, or east
Notts near the Lincolnshire border. His/her comment about beggars
being dirt is also offensive and i hope he/she never falls on hard
times and needs to rely on the charity and goodwill of strangers,
not to mention the loss of dignity. Also, i live in Stockport and
its a lovely place. Don't get me wrong, Nottingham is brilliant
too, but Brideport seems to have nothing but contempt for everywhere
except Rushcliffe, the city centre and south Notts. Has he/she ever
lived away from Nottingham and not just visited? I find most Nottinghamians
to be friendly and helpful, but there's always one!
Kev

Nottingham
- best city? In reply to Bridegate,
you should get out more, particularly to that place only 35 miles
up the M1 from you called THE NORTH, which according to you is full
of 'old slums'! I'm not denying that many towns and cities up here
have sub-standard housing, but don't they everywhere? Take a look
around your own city. Radford, Hyson Green, Basford, Lenton, Meadows
and Sneinton all have 'old slums'.. Broxtowe, Aspley, Top Valley,
Bulwell and Clifton all have 'newer slums'. The fact is though,
EVERY large city has them, whether it's in the North, Midlands or
the South. It may surprise you to know that Nottingham is one of
the poorest cities in the UK, unlike Leeds where I live! Get in
your car, drive up the M1 and see for yourself! Just ignore Sheffield
on the way, that IS a slum!

just makes the city better. What makes nottingham is the people...I

So what if we find it hilarious to put bubble bath in the fountains

Nottingham
is not best
I have left Nottingham after having lived here from 1981 to 2000.
I would sum this City up as being an average place. Not the best place
in the country but not the worst either. The first six years of my
time here and the last three were the worst. During the first six
I received comments about my being from another part of the UK that
to be quite frank would have been considered Racist if I had been
black or Asian. (The Evening Post likes to peddle the notion that
Notts folk are outword looking. They can be quite parochial). The
last three years were marred by a Car theft and a violent mugging.
I have now moved onto Oxford. Whilst I still visit Nottingham it will
always be with rather mixed emotions. All I will say is that Nottingham
in 2002 is a rather better and improved place than the City of 1981.
At least it appears more welcoming to strangers.

I'm a Nottingham
lad currently living in Sydney at the moment and there are obvious
differences between the two (size, climate etc). However one of
the main differences here is how clean Sydney is - there's no dog
mess anywhere, no needles or other rubbish at all. I'm not too bothered
about beggars - you get them anywhere where there's a lot of money
in town, stands to reason. The other bad thing about Notts is the
violence you get after the pubs close - maybe more police could
help there. But I'm planning on coming back - the people are still
great and there is a good vibe about the place. We just need to
make sure the council doesn't turn the place into a giant fun pub.

violence
If I could address the point raised by our Australian poster, I
think violence is something embedded, sadly, in British society.
It may sound quite silly, but I'm more proud of being from Nottingham
than I am of England. I totally agree there should be more police
in the night-life spots, but I think the problem of solving violent
culture is far deeper than NOttingham itself can contain. Just my
thought...
Andy
Re-iteration of Andy's Comments to poster from Australia
I would agree with Andy that British culture is now dominated by
violence and I would further suggest that whilst we are certainly
not at the same state as America, we are heading in that direction.
Nottingham has seen a great increase in violence (or an increase
in reporting of it by the local newspaper) of late. Today - a young
lad and a granddad were robbed in Hyson Green; the shootings in
St. Ann's and the Meadows. Moreover, looking nationally - the riots
last year and shootings in London.

No Nottingham
is far from being the best city in the country!! On my visits to
the city I thought the streets were dirty, the much hyped shopping
facilities dissapointing and the people unhelpful and usually un-washed.
Having said that Nottingham isn't the worst city in the country
either. It's not as dreary and insular as Derby, while Manchester
has to be the dirtiest and most unpleasant city in the UK.

Perhaps I could answer a few points people have raised. The poster
below me doesn't deserve a response if her only argument is that
people are unwashed and unhelpful, clearly the type of people that
match her. But Nottingham is a teriffic city. Look at what it's
got... all the history you could hope for, it's second for shopping
outside London (I think) and its night scene is one of the top three
in the country. Continuing, its university is 10 times overbooked
and considered one of the best three with Oxford and Cambridge,
and as for sport... we have a world class tennis centre with a professional
tournament, we have world class ice stadium facilities and Europe's
biggest bowling alley! These may be minor points but they all add
up to one hell of a lot to do in Nottingham, and to say it doesn't
have character is totally false in my opinion.

and in reply...
In reply to Andy from Nottingham, the poster you said was below
you (that's me Andy) is actually above you (naturally, way above
you) and 'she' happens to be a he. It pays to get your facts straight
before you engage your mouth. Unfortunately, the rest of your post
was as inaccurate. I especially liked the one about Nottingham University
being on a par with Oxford and Cambridge. Very funny, that made
me laugh. As for shopping facilities, well sure there are big departments
of M&S, Boots, Smiths etc but you can find those in the centre of
any city in the country. What has Nottingham got to offer that is
different or unique? Birmingham for instance has all of those and
next year, after the massive redevelopment is complete, will have
a Selfridges, John Lewis and Harvey Nicholls along side them. Now
that's what you call a (provincial) shopping experience.

That doesn't change the fact your post was based on minor insults
to the people of Nottingham. Such posters on the internet can even
be called 'muppets'...
I won't enter
into a needless discussion about who has the best city, but you
should learn to respect that my opinions differ greatly from yours,
and I, in comparison, don't laugh at yours as you do mine.
We can be thankful
Nottingham has far less a race-relations issue (as raised in the
recent reports).
Oh, and since
your name is either a nickname or foreign, perhaps if you're decent
you'll understand me not recognising it as male.

I was born in Nottingham and lived their for 17 ripe years.
I have good memories and good friends from this area. However I
moved to another city at this age and have ben here for 11 years.
It is called Manchester and I would willingly agree that Manchester
WAS a dirty city - it has quite a dark character indeed. However
I'm guessing you have not been back recently. It is currently going
through an architechural renaissance along with huge development
schemes which are years ahead of other UK cities. It is the only
rival to London in England "But what about Birmingham" cries Moo,
"It wil have a Selfridges and a Harvey Nichols - now that's a provincial
shopping experience" Well boo hoo Moo. Manchester will have 2 Selfridges
and a Harvey Nichols and a Tiffany's and an urban city regeneration
programme which, in say 3 years, other cities will attempt to replicate.
Oh and the Commonwealth games, Man united (though cannot confess
to be a fan myself) and clean Tram system (oh guess what, do I see
other cities now attempting this idea?)unlike those gorgeously dirty
tubes you have in the capital. Good luck.

and in reply... (to Benson)
Yes I have been to both Manchester and Nottingham within the
last few months and each one to my eyes were dark and dreary places.
Apart from the grubbiness of both of the places the things that
I noticed were that Manchester fills up with drunken students after
6pm, and Nottingham is littered with aggressive beggars. If I say
no to a beggar I don't expect to be shouted at in the street or
have to justify my decision. Of course I do have sympathy for these
people. Being down and out in Nottingham must mean that you have
well and truly hit rock bottom (at least in Manchester they would
have a flourishing crime scene to turn to too supplement their income).
As for Birmingham, it already has a Harvey Nichols, the Selfridges
and John Lewis are still under construction and will be huge and
I'm sure there will be a plethora of smaller shopping outlets. All
of this will leave the l! ik! es of Nottingham and Manchester in
the shade making Birmingham the best shopping experience outside
of London

I visited your city where my son now live with his wife, a lovely
English lady. Stayed there for one week. The city center is nice although
the streets are narrow with odd looking people selling magazine of
some sort. I like the people. They are friendly. There is a lot of
history in your city and it can not be compared to the city where
I came from.

marketsquare
I left New Basford in Nottingham to emigrate to Picton Ont. Canada
50 yrs ago presently I spend my winters in Florida. Recently I read
about Nottingham In the speakout web page.Your article dealt with
memories of the past.I remeber the market square when it rivaled speakers
corner in Hyde Park.A particular event at which I was present as a
thirteen year old lad,it happened in the early years of the war when
the facist black shirts were spouting forth to a large crowd. The
words did not sit well with the audience who chased the black shirts
out of the square up to parliament street where the black shirts jumped
onto a passing bus, escaping the angry citizens of Nottingham I wonder
if any of your readers were either hare or hounds in this escaped.
By the way the lions in the square were supposed to roar when a virgin
walked by, although I was at this locati! on! many times I never heard
them roar. This does not say however ,that they have never roared.

Studying
in Leeds
Ok it would do any harm to have a few more bars that were open later,
and a couple more "proper" clubs, Leeds has its good shopping and
its good clubs too as does Notts, But move to Leeds then see how
b****y cold you get and how God damn miserable some of the Northerners
are. Stiff upper lip? stiff head!

Dan, Nottingham - best city?
In reply to Dan, the Notts born student who is now in Leeds. You
obviously haven't spoken to many people from Leeds if you think
they are all 'miserable northerners'! I was born in West Yorkshire,
but have also lived in Nottingham (Chilwell to be exact!), and can
tell you that without doubt, Leeds people are much more friendlier!
Don't get me wrong, I love Nottingham, and think it's a great city,
but Leeds certainly has more going for it, in terms of employment,
shopping, nightlife, and places to visit. All you have in Nottingham
is 'Robin Hood'! As for Leeds being cold, Nottingham is only 70
miles away from Leeds, and to be honest, the climate is no different.
At least our people are warmer!

I'm
a student at Nottingham and I'm very impressed with the city in general.
It it a good size-not too big to feel overwhelming, but big enough
to offer all the facilities you could want. The shopping and nightlife
match most other places in the country. Theres plenty of clubs, live
music and sports facilities such as the tennis centre, water sports
centre, ice rink, etc.
However, crime
is a major problem. Around Lenton and Radford its hard to feel safe
when peoples houses are being held up at knifepoint. Also, for such
an apparently affluent area, there are so many beggars in the city
centre its unbelievable. It certainly doesn't help the city's image-especially
for visitors.
As far as public
transport goes, I'm suppose I'm lucky that I live on a major bus
route! :-) Obviously nowhere's perfect, but I'm definitely glad
I moved here.

I was born in Sherwood and lived as a child in Sheraton Drive near
Wollaton Park. Anybody out there remember me as a young lad? Went
to Wollaton School until the age of 7 then left the area in 1960.
Been back many times to see relatives, sadly all dead now. Still sometimes
visit to watch FOREST and I follow them at some away games. Still
love Nottingham; the greatest city in the UK. I have so many great
memories of the place........

Nottingham's OK. It doesn't have much charm. Compare it with other
historical cities like Canterbury and Bath and Nottingham is awful.
The charm of Maid Marion way? The smell of urine/ vomit filled friday
night streets? Bit grim really. Nice, fun young people though. The
older generations just whinge all the time. The river needs cleaning
too. Beggars aren't so bad as they are at least entertaining. What
is that statue in front of M & S?
