I lived in
Nottingham back in 85-88 in a small village called Woodborough.
I was 12 and loved every minute of it...It is definitly the best
city in England. I now live in Los Angeles which is amazing. The
good thing is my family is from Nottingham so I get to visit this
great place every now and then. One day down the road I hope to
move back and live there.

Yes Nottingham
is a nice place ,but it would be even nicer if it was,t for the
developers ripping it apart.Several examples one ,top of maid marian
way red brick office blocks, the ripping down the old evening post
building to put up another leisure complex as if we need it .What
are they going to do with the beautifull Co-op building. And what
about the Broadmarsh Centre ,when that was built part of Nottingham's
heart was ripped out also the history that went it ,you can only
see a tiny piece of it, ie drurry hill .Don't get me wrong there
does need to be building progression, but do we need to take away
the history of nottingham to do it. We are supposedly trying to
attract tourists not put them off.Yes Nottingham is a nice place
let's keep it that way .

Is Nottingham
the best city? It must be a rhetorical question, as I am sure that
the person who has visited ALL of the others for comparative purposes
does not exist on this planet.
A far better
question would be "is Nottingham a good city?", to which I would
offer a qualified 'yes'. The shopping and nightlife are excellent,
but the aggression from drunks and some beggars can be intimidating
- much more so than many other UK and European cities that I have
visited. I buy The Big Issue, but there is a limit to the number
of copies that I require. More annoyance than crime perhaps. Rome,
Barcelona and Naples have far higher predatory crime rates than
Nottingham, but Paris is much lower, and Amsterdam city centre is
extremely safe and comfortable to walk around in at any hour of
the day or night.
All cities
have something different to offer, along with their upsides and
downsides, so it can never be a fair comparison. Nottingham had
much of its historical heart ripped out by the city planners in
the 1950's and '60's, in their enthusiasm for such elegant developments
as Maid Marion Way. Other cities were more far-sighted, and it shows
today. Nottingham's 'castle' is a fine building, but something of
a misnomer, and a great disappointment to many tourists. Unlike
say, Dubrovnik, which was bombed and shelled to hell just ten years
ago, and is now immaculately restored as a World Heritage Centre.
Nottingham is
a lively, vibrant city to live and work in, with two good universities,
good shops, bars and clubs, history going back at least 1000 years,
and some very pleasant countryside on its doorstep. But please don't
get too defensive and parochial - if you think it's the best, then
you haven't lived!

I moved to Nottm
a year ago from Birmingham (ironically because I couldn't get a
decent job there), which most people think is a dosshole compared
to the rest of the country; but each to their own.
Although I
miss Brum loads and going "home" is great, I like Nottm cos it is
a bit quieter and there's a nice atmosphere in the decent bars and
clubs - even if there are loads of evil, rude mannered kids on the
buses - or so it seems. Anyhow, Nottm is becoming more and more
cosmopolitan each week, and I think ppl should seriously give it
some credit. Oh yeah, and sack David Platt as Forest going up into
the Premiership would make Nottm even greater!!!!

Speaking as
a lass from Chesterfield, I can safely say that Nottingham is a
pretty funky place. We've got everything we need to entertain ourselves
in close proximity - along with work/studies to pay for it all.
Having read through all these comments though I'd like to put forward
my gripe...The Social in Hockley. Great place, good tunes, Nice
bouncers, beers a plenty.
Will someone
tell me then who employed Hitler as the 'picker' on the door? In
this day and age she has the right to exclude those she thinks not
worthy of spending money in the bar that pays her minimum wage (I
hope..)bsimply because of what they are wearing. And not in the
tradition sense of white socks/trainers/footie shirts but simply
because she doesn't think you're trendy/alternative/cool enough.
Enough of that bollocks,it's 2001 and individuality is a wonderful
thing. I'm off to the Irish..It looks like a cow shed, beer's $£"%
and tunes are cheesy but no-one cares what you look like and all
are having a ball...

Nottingham
is the World's best City without a doubt!!! Ive lived here all my
life and would never dream of leaving (UNLESS I MOVE TO THE USA)
The shopping heres the best, better than London by far. There are
some really pretty places outside the main City part you just have
to look! As for sports what about the new Ice ring, its brilliant.
I truly believe that NOTTINGHAM IS THE WORLDS BEST CITY!

Yes.
My Nottingham Ancestry dates back to pre-civil war times (my ancestor
was Hercules Clay - Lord Mayor of Newark in the 1640's). I have
lived worked an studied here all my life, as has my fathers side
of the family for the last 400 years. I have never considered it
anything less than the best city in the country.
While you may not get a passing smile off everyone, you will find
indigenous Nottingham folk are extremely friendly and welcoming.
As for beggars, i think there is an even mix of the genuinely needy
and those who would seek to exploit, and discernment through familiarity
seems the only solution.
The nightlife has definetly improved in the last few years, as has
the quality of shopping e.t.c. with the construction of many new
buildings whose architecture remains more faithful to Nottinghams
classical styling than the 1960's/1970's monstrosities that existed
previously (some still remain).
I am proud to say i'm from Nottingham, and find it such a pleasant
place to live! i! have never left.

I was born
in Notts (Arnold to be exact) and now live in Norwich after studying
for my degree here. I do miss Notts in many ways and it is definitely
one of the liveliest cities in the UK. Not as large and in-personable
as London, but bigger and brighter than most other cities.
I would love to live there again but I’ve found different
qualities in Norwich, which I wouldn’t swap to go back home.
I’m constantly taking friends to Notts for a weekend, everyone
I’ve taken there loves it and wants to go again!
The night life is friendlier and more easier going than in other
cities – and you’d have to be dead to not have a good
time! So cheers to a great city + memories.
I’ll meet you all next to the left Lion, outside the Council
House! P.S – I used to go to Arnold Hill between 1987 –
1994 – any one else out there? (Mr Literlands Tutor Group
and then a young Geography teacher who's name I can’t remember)

This city council
has wasted so much money over the years it is unreal - just look
at the new ice centre cost 拢35m+ had to use lottery grants etc.
The old rink was never in great profit so how the hell is the new
one supposed to survive. The pubs are too brash and when groups
of lads/lasses ( sometimes worst for drink)start going round - knowhere
sophisitcated in this so called modern city. Shops still closing
down and now with the onset of street pay parking - exodus to Meadowhall
for shopping - takes me as long to get to Nott'm as to got Meadowhall
The city has got to improve and be more realistic to peoples needs
without spending loads of money

I moved away
from nottingham last september to go to university. And its true
what they say: 'you don't know what you've got til its gone'. As
far as i'm concerned, nottingham is by far and away the best young
city in the country. The nightlife is unrivaled, and the only thing
it needs is a 'big name' club, which might happen soon. All my new
friends at uni regard nottingham as a hip-un-happening place, and
they haven't even been there!. so all i'm gonna say is: NOTTINGHAM
ROCKS!!!
M Wallace
|
I just started
goin to uni in nottinham an i luv it. the night life ius superb.
until goin to uni london was the venue. it is faceless compared
to nott. nott has the best drum n base scene outside bristol and
there are more bars than days in a year. all the international students
i know sing its praises. clubs such as the bomb and beatroot safe.
the only problem i see is the amount of late 20 early 30 yr old
towny chavs pickin fights with each and pising in doorways. this
is not a nott problem tho and is nation wide. it cou;ld be remedied
i feel by extending the drinking hours to prevent binge drinkin
that leads to violent behaviour.

I have lived
in Notts all my life,I love it!!!!!The people, the shopping, the
night-life and everything else about Notts. Those of you who knock
it, obviously are going to the wrong places and talking to the wrong
people.I have many friends dotted around England, and when they
come to visit, its always the same, "I wish I lived here,I
want to move here!!!"
One friend who lives in Cumbria, visits at least 6 times per year,
and that is a 6-7 hour journey on the train, she can't get enough
of the place!!!!

Originally from
nottingham now living in leicester. people in nottingham dont know
how lucky they are . try living down here theres even more litter
and beggars. and the city council dont have any vision. they knock
sports centres down without replacing them. a tram system is a vision
of the future with arguments about trollybuses still . its like
being in the dark ages. nottingham has great theatres, restaurants,
bars clubs and shopping

Nottingham
is a great city with some fantastic people and an excellent night
life... but why can't they do something about all the dam'n "beggars"
that seem to ask you for money every 50 meters.
Would Notts
council provide us all with a free t-shirt saying "pi$* off
I'm not a cash machine!"
Why don't the
成人论坛 do an undercover film on the problem of begging in this city
as it seems to have become a total farce ... ever seen a beggar
drive a brand new car.. get your cameras rolling and you might just
see the scam ;)
Notts council
may just get off their lazy a*$es and do something about it before
tourists begin to get tired of being pestered and go elsewhere !
No point having
a nice lawn if there's dog $$$$ all over it !
Lawn Mower
Nottingham
and in reply...
You obviously speak with very little knowledge of the issues
facing many people living in Nottingham, whether they have homes
or not. I find your arrogance insulting and your ignorance obviously
comes from a lack of education, which i might add, is displayed
through your use of obsanities. Nottingham is a diverse city which
has, and is still developing many facilities for all. It seems to
me 'Lawn Mower' that you should find a little more compassion in
your heart and recognise that not everyone is a fortunate as yourself
to have a clear mind, food in their stomachs and a roof over their
heads. I only hope that you never find yourself on the streets cold
and alone, faced only with a barrage of angry people because you
dared to ask for help.
Have you ever
heard of the saying "community spirit?" i think you need
a few lessons in this.
Nottingham is for everyone, regardless of culture, creed, ability,
religion, wealth, and mental health. It is about looking after the
people within and creating an atmosphere where everyone can feel
comfortable sharing thier time. Nottingham is not just here for
you.
The only type
of people i wish to rid Nottingham of is the biggots such as yourself.
p.s. the world
is not flat.

I have lived
in Nottingham for 8 years having previously live in London,Liverpool
and Brighton. The good points are prices, housing and general peacefulness.
The bad points are the people (best friend one moment, ignore you

(Market Sq. is pretty dull).

Wow you people!!!
My name is Tony Hadley (and before you ask... no not that one) and
after reading your views i thought i just had to make a comment.
Mr Crossland, i can't say that i've heard of you... plans for world
domination still on the drawing board are they son???? at least
you have something positive to say about the city... Mr Masters,
was it really the city that did that to you? i doubt it somehow,
a bad workman always blames the city he lives in???
Tony Hadley
nottingham
and in reply...
Ok. now i don't want to get involved in a public debate but i must
take issue with 'Tony Hadley'. You may think that to change
your name may make you more popular, but even through a few short
sentences your true personality shines through your 80's pop facade.
Not since Elvis Presleys music teacher gave him a bad report has
one person been so wrong about the talents of another. I will take
Robin Hood's mantle, and will banish you from the city and send
you to Derby (a fate worse than death i think you'll agree). Pack
your belongings Tony, you will soon live up to your namesake and
be 'the forgotten one'.
Jez Crossland

and in reply...
Mr Crossland, i really must protest. not only do you have an
amazingly over-inflated opinion about yourself, you also fail to
conduct a conherent argument even when given the chance to think
about what you type. please answer the following 3 questions.
1) Who do you think you are?
2) exactly how do you plan to mark your influence on the world?
3) how close are you to doing this? i look forward to your response.

There are some
things that indeed bug me, and things that i love about my home
city. I can't stand the way the buses in my area ALWAYS seem to
run in 3's or late. And traffic...good god! But i must say that
Nottingham has to be the city in which to shop. Nowhere else really
like it. The people are gr8 to talk to (even if some people get
annoyed when we call them mi duck!) and although i will be off to
university in London in September, i'm going to miss Nottingham
very much.
