Well i think Nottingham is without a doubt one of the best cities
in the UK, HOWEVER. The City council seems to becomming so PC and
so inept to its thousands of taxpayers that they are in serious danger
of damaging Nottingham's reputation. We have Beggars, Druggies, vandalism,
all to evident in our stunning city centre. The constant petitioning
is apalling. The city council have virtually NO police in the streets.
I know a few older people who simply dare not venture out to the city
centre at night! what a shame as its the old generation that made
Nottingham so famous! I will no longer be voting in any local election
until we have a rational selection of people to vote for. What a shame
for such a nice city. Don't get me started on the transport fiasco

Most Northerners are proud people and the people of the East Midlands
are no exception, Nottingham does have its faults but it is a very
nice place with plenty of independant shops and there is always plenty
to look at. But the best thing about Nottingham and indeed all of
the towns and cities in the East Midlands is the fact that our geographically
possition allows us to be a true melting pot not only with global
cultures but our central status mean people from all over the UK pass
by us, that is (I believe) why the people of Nottingham are so friendly
and proud. I work all over the UK and the people of the Midlands are
far more wlecoming than a lot of other places which take less kindly
to "outsiders" (no names mentioned). I am working in Swansea at the
moment which is a very nice little place, very friendly people and
by the sea, well worth a visit. Oh yeah, forgot to say, County are
the pride of Nottingham!

I can express my passion for the UK but as an australian, there is
nothing anyone can do to help me. I can tell you for hours how much
I love England and yet that wont do a damn thing to get me there.
I have been for 2 years before and now I am having withdrawals. Watching
corrie isn't enough nor is watching Bart-Williams. The thaught of
having to shop at bloody Safeway instead of Tesco shits me up the
wall. All I ask for is some decent footy - other than AFL that is.
What the hell is going on with Jocky Scott, Bart-Williams and the
rest of the b-side rovers? Who is trotting on their grass man? Keel
over - time to catch my plane and teach you's all about footy and
how to play it right. I'm going to live in Notts - you wait and see.
My head will be bigger than the town hall and my glow brighter than
marks & sparks! Right on!

Is
Nottingham best
To the 18 year old lazy student who wonders what the fuss is all about.
Nottingham may not be the 'best' city in the UK, though quite how
you would measure something like that I'm not sure, but it certainly
is a far better place to live than many. I lived in a town in Buckinghamshire
for a year, and it made me appreciate exactly how much Nottingham
has going for it.

Nottm Best
NO. Much needs to be changed in Nottingham.I have lived here all my
life, Meadows born and bred, but I wouldnt walk through there now.Criminals
have got it made in this city, the police are so hard pressed and underfunded
that most dont give a damn anymore, they simply go through the motions.
At the same time we have a council(who keeps voting them in their
mums and dads?) who waste money hand over foot and are accountable
to no one.For example the new Ice Stadium, even the users of the old
ice rink said that the new plans were a recipe for disaster, but, the
council knew best. Result loss 拢1.4 million and will probably lose
same again indefinately, payment for this via our community chatge! If
a business had made such an absolute ass of a project heads would
roll, why dont our councillors listen to their voters instead of massaging
their own ego's with hair brained,half baked,ill planned s! ch! emes.What
do I like about Nottingham? the people, their grit and determination
in the face of adversity, especially those from the coal mining communities.Despite
the violent side of Nottingham I would say Nottingham folk are the
most straight forward no nonsence types, allways willing to offer a
helping hand or help to a stranger. You can take a man/woman out of
Nottingham, but, you cant take Nottingham out of a man/woman.

I'm
originally from Forest Fields, and finally returned last summer after
long periods in Bradford and London.
In some ways,
I am disappointed. The city centre, although on the face of it an
attractive place, seems to have been abandoned for the sole use
of drunks, aggressive beggars and market researchers. Where are
the police we pay lots of tax for???
Most recently,
I lived in south London, which has Britain's highest rate of gun
and other violent crime, yet I feel far more intimidated walking
through Nottingham city centre during the day than I ever did walking
through areas like Brixton at night.
Public transport,
for a city of this size, is a disaster, and getting worse... and
which fool decided that an area of this size only needs one outlet
for bus passes???
And as for the much-promoted nightlife... well, it's OK if your
idea of a good night out revolves solely around getting as drunk
as possible, but for those of us who have slightly more developed
tastes, there is little. Why are there virtually no venues with
all-night licences??? It's like rave culture never happened! What's
the council playing at???
However... I
expect I will never leave the city I was born in again.
I'm definitely not a teenager anymore, so I'm more interested in
a slightly quieter way of life now anyway. :-)
So I will end
on the good points of Nottingham, which are those which I expect
will keep me here for life, and which finally drove me out of London:
Good-quality housing at a reasonable price;
Roads which are not congested 24 hours a day;
Lots of green/open spaces;
Excellent shops, both in town and further out.
Friendlier people and more sense of community.
Would I say
it's the best city? No, but there are certainly many worse places
to live, even in the U.K. I for one would not ever want to return
to a city such as Bradford - where decades of neglect and an all-too-apparent
racial divide have destroyed a once-proud city. Nottingham will
never be perfect, but we ought to be grateful for what we do have
- it could be a much, much worse...

Memories
of Nottingham
Some of the happiest, and saddest times of my life have been in Nottingham,
however i encourage people to travel, especially to the U.S, and Europe,
you will soon see that nottingham is meerly a small fish in a veritable
ocean of fascinating cities. Although my parents still live in Nottingham,
i am currently studying my PhD at the University of Derby. Nottingham
does have a very special atmosphere, especially on Matchdays, i will
never forget the first Forest match i attended with my farther, that
was a truely special day!

Best
City?
No, of course Nottingham is not the best City in the country. There
is no best city just different ones. I personally love the city, there
is a very good shopping centre, from memory a very good nightlife,
healthy cultural diversity, a useful focal point in the square, two
good football teams, good sports facilities, plenty of shooting incidents,
social depravation....why oh why does every one need to be the best?
What is the point? Is this a school playground thing?...my city's
better than yours...ner..ne..ne..nerner. Nottingham is, in my humble
opinion, interesting, vibrant and well worth a visit, worth investing
in and good to live in but not "the best".

- a great city?
I have lived in Nottingham since 1983. I left to go to Uni and lived
abroad but returned here after Uni and have even invested in property.
There are more beggars here than anywhere else I know, and the bus
service has gone from bad to worse...but hey the numerous bars, clubs,
great shops, and most important the fantastic looking women make up
for all that!!! Many of my mates who have been to visit like Nottingham
and believe that is has a lot going for it. I can appreciate people
going on about famous old buildings being demolished but you have
to move with the times. More and more students are coming to study
here and many stay on after Graduation..(or like me return after Uni)
and why because Nottingham has everything you could look for in a
city...and quite frankly I wouldn't live anywhere else..except Sydney
but that's just another world altogether.

The best city
I left Nottingham in 1967 and emigrated to New York, USA. During my
34 years in New York I have visited my home city and my family at
least twice each year. (The benefits of being in the travel profession).
The city I left in 1967 was one to be very proud of... and I was.
The collection of historic buildings in the city centre were outstanding.
Almost every period of English history was represented. I did my shopping
in the best collection of small shops, local boutiques and unique
department stores(Griffin & Spalding). Going out at night was safe,
and the city pubs were clean and friendly. The streets kept relatively
free of rubbish, and the people treated their city with respect. WHAT
HAPPENED? What collection of successive city idiots have allowed my
home town to become the cesspool of today. Who's brother got the contract
to design some of the ugliest buildings I've ev! er! seen? What civil
servant burocrat spends the taxpayers money on useless items like
ugly fountains that don't work? I still love Nottingham, but it's
the Nottingham of my past. I keep this lovely memory tucked safely
inside my heart, where it will remain untouched forever.

City
of Nottingham
Nottingham! I've lived on the outskirts for 55 years and have seen
a lot of changes in the City. What I think the city was lacking many
years was a proper ring road? We only have half of one, so people
wanting to use the other half of Nottingham were forced into the city
centre causing congestion, it seems the council did not spend money
on the roads before and are now getting out of it by using trams as
an excuse. Nottingham on the whole is a very good City as others have
said plenty of night life and with some Cafe's and Bar's in the daytime
having tables and seating outside on the pavement is a great idea
just like being abroad. For the visitors, I think the Castle is a
bit disappointing, it looks more like an Hall than a Castle, I think
Belvoir Castle is the nearest one, still intact? Wollaton Hall, Newsead
Abbey etc. We have the National Water Sports Centre for anyone who
likes sailing, canoeing, water skiing, white water rafting and wind
surfing. Football teams Nottingham Forest & County. Ice Stadium.

I moved to Nottingham in 1996 and I was amazed by the place (I previously
lived in Shropshire). I could not get over all the amenities, shops
etc it was all pretty mind-blowing. To begin with I really enjoyed
living in Nottingham - it even had a reliable bus service then! However,
in the past year or so everything has suddenly gone very wrong...
mainly due to the various Nottingham authorities losing the plot completely.
This is just a few of things that will make Nottingham an unbearable
place to live: - Police standards appear to be dropping (in my experience
they don't seem to exist = when I got burgled in 1997 they were prompt,
efficient and really good, but in 2000/2001 I have had huge problems
with the Police not turning up to quite serious offences) - Public
Transport about to disintegrate into chaos. The new timetables come
in on the 30th September where NCT will cut 10% of its services, and
all through-city services. The bus service is fine if you are going
in/out of the city but if you want to go round the city (people do
live outside of the city centre believe it or not) then you haven't
got a hope. - A tram system nobody seems to want. I agree that Nottingham
is possibly in desperate need of a tram system but why the line that
was chosen? We already have many railway lines in the city that could
be used to create an efficient suburban service. And finally the issue
that could kill Nottingham - the workplace parking charge... I am
most livid about this as there is no consultation at all - I just
see it as a very good way for the council to get extra funds to be
spent on more useless projects. Surely, if this charge is to be produced
there must be alternatives to the car? I live in Basford and work
in Bilborough. It can take an hour to get to work by bus but only
10 minutes in the car - there is no competition! In other words I
would have no option other than have to pay the levy as my work is
passing the cost on. All in all, Nottingham is a great city - just
don't live here.

The
things we`re good at, we really are good at,(forget the ex-eastwood
lad, eastwood lads, never popular in town, sorry!). The things we
screw up we do that properly! 3/4 million conurbation and W.Bridgford,
Beeston, Arnold and the like are in their own litle boroughs, that
is laughable, but that is the attitude that stops this area from being
good,(but unbalanced), to being very good. By the way it does annoy
me when people from the boroughs call it "our city" it isn`t you do
not live in it!!!!

I'm glad there are others who feel like I do about recent changes
and the endless (seemingly) development in Nottingham. I moved here
in 1986, and so many of the landmarks of my past have gone - Mushroom
Bookshop, Hiziki, the old Evening Post building, Maxine's cafe,
the Odeon, and even Stewart's Garden shop is on the way out; I hope
they will find new premises, if they haven't already done so, because
I don't know of anywhere else that sell what they do.
I just feel
alienated by all the change in Nottingham in the last two years.
The City Council seem determined to turn Nottingham into one giant
leisure centre, full of nothing but cafe-bars, clubs, ultra-expensive
flats and shops, most of which will be the same old chainstores you
will find in any other city in the land.
By making it
difficult for individual shops and small businesses to remain in
the city, the City Co! un! cil is in danger of draining the city
of what character and individual interest it still has. They don't
seem to have given enough consideration to the long-term effects
of their policies; sure, wall-to-wall bars and 'city living' (someone
explain the appeal of that to me, please - I don't get it) may be
'in' now, but what about in 20, 50 years time when trends have moved
on?
City-centre
living isn't an established tradition in Nottingham, and I wonder
if the present city council is making a mistake by allowing, as
I see it, Nottingham to develop so far along certain lines. I've
always thought of Nottingham as an irritatingly trendy place; what
will happen when said cafe-bars and city living aren't the thing
anymore?
Well, I'll have
to return in a decade or two, take a ride on the tram and find out!
And I also wonder whether the Council ever takes any notice of the
people most affected by their policies regarding the development
of the city, i.e. those who live and work! i! n and around Nottingham.
It seems to me that the Council have the attitude "We know what's
best for you", and refuse to consider any other option, just as
previous councils have done before, e.g. when Drury Hill was bulldozed
to make way for the Broadmarsh centre, despite public outcry. Perhaps
that's Nottingham's trendiness for you, or perhaps it's time for
another party to take charge of the city; the present lot seem to
have become thoroughly complacent. By the way, I did choose to come
to Nottingham; I'm just sad that so much of what I used to know
has gone for good.

General
State Of Our City
I would just like to comment on the current situation in our city.
Firstly I would like to take up the point of the ridiculous amount
of bars in our city centre. Is it me or does there seem to be a new
bar opened every week in town? If we don't want to encourage drunks
and louts to our town then why so many bars? Also I would like to
comment on the amount of police time spent hassling kids on skateboards.
Firstly we should encourage our youngsters to skateboard, not persecute
them. For heavens sake they are not criminals so why treat them as
such? I have seen police hound these poor kids all day long, yet not
once have I seen the police stop beggars, drunks, drug users or aggressive
yobs. Why is this? Would you rather they were taking drugs, mugging,
shop-lifting? Stop this madness at once...I can know see why people
leave this City in droves...I consider doing it myself!

I was born and raised in Nottingham, and I try to go home every year.
I left Nottingham in 1970 and now live in Carmel, California. Things
I remember about the club scene when I was there were the disco's
(dated word perhaps) We had the three rowing clubs, the Britannia
(Brit) the Union and the Nottingham Boat club (The Boat) These were
all down on Trent side, next to Forest. The Brit was my favorite,
and Darrell King was the best bar tender! The Union was a bit more
high-brow type music and the regulars there thought they were better
than us down at the Brit. Each club had it's own regulars. Down town
in the lace market we had the Beachcomber and before all of these,
there was a murky place called the "Dungeon." These were the days
of the Mods and Rockers and we would all congregate down in the market
square and "Hang-out" Remember the scooters with all the chrome? Does
anyone remember these clubs? We also had real music back then, not
the crap we have to listen to today (Now I'm starting to sound like
my Mother!) Actually Nottingham has always been a fun town. But when
I come home I hate all the Americanization, I get enough MCBurgerking
here. Don't get rid of the old buildings, what they did with the "Flying
Horse" was terrible - it used to be a great pub and a fairly decent
place to eat and hang-out, now it's just another shopping arcade.
I could go on, but I'll see my old hometown in just a couple more
weeks.

I like Nottingham but I do have complaints... Clubbing- absolutely
abismal compared to places like Sheffield or even Derby. Plenty of
'beer boy' clubs like Ocean & The Works and very few true clubs like
Media & The Bomb. Also, transport wise we're in a mess (then again
like most cities) - very much due to the crazy removal of Victoria

Whilst I don't disagree with Natalies comments generally, nice areas
to live are not exclusively South of the Trent. I live in Arnold,
off Gedling road, and the area around where I live is very nice, especially
Woodthorpe etc, and Arnold is similar to West Bridgford in its social
diversity, and has excellent shopping facilities etc. As for beggars,
it's true that they have increased a lot in recent years, but if Mary
is moving from London she will be no stranger to begging (which is
on a much larger scale there). I know, as my daughter used to live

nottingham best
hi all... i was born in nottingham and left when i was 17. i returned
for 3 years 97-2001. its a great city from the respect of it feels
like a big city but is only small. but i think its loosing its character
due to it slowly becoming one big pub or cafe. along side all the
commercial developments theres needs to be projects for communities
and the youngsters. i lived in manchester for 6 years and saw the
phenomenom of scallies grow there. i was always refreshed to go back
to nottingham where this had not occured. but now it is on the increase
with young kids drinking and smoking pot causing violence and vandalism.
u need to give these kids an outlet as there is nothing for them to
do. so they emulate the adults. if nothing is done there will be more
homelessness and the breakdown in social frabic greater than at present.
these are the future parents role models etc. it seems the city is
building but only for those who have money the result will be ghettoes
and gangs like manchester.! o! n a lighter note i rate the people
for the down to earth no bs attitude. tho i find them somewhat small
town in their outlook sometimes. i have left to emmigrate for new
zealand but i will carry nottingham with me for my whole life as it
has shaped my outlook on life somewhat. i look forward to returning
in a few years to see how the tram works and hopefully the viccy centre

Be
proud of Nottm!
I left Beeston about 10 years ago to live in west Cornwall with my
family. It's only when you leave the place (and end up in a tip like
Cornwall) that you realise how proud we should be of our city. If,
of course, the heritage of the place wasn't being destroyed every
day. The city council should be hanged, drawn and quartered for what
they've allowed to happen to the historical buildings in the City
of Nottingham. You can build all these glass-fronted monstrosities
(like that effort on Parliament St) anywhere in the world - they haven't
got any individuality or character. We need our city preserving so
we can be proud of it, and so when visitors arrive they know what
city they're in by the unique nature of the place.

I'm Mike Armstrong,
14 years old from Nottingham, just a kid. but what brings all the
trendies to make my life hell? why is there thousands and thousands
of trendies and about 100 individuals? if you see me hanging around

sleeves rolled up with leather gloves and a chain and cargo jeans....come
up to me and talk to me. then i'll tell you about how much of a
trendy place nottingham is.....theres no freedom of the way you
dress....you have to be ignorant and insultive to "fit in" , you
have to treat girls like objects to be considered "not gay".....its
sick, nottingham teens are just sick."nottingham - englands best

and another
response...
the on-going
"war" between trendies and metallers/skate kids/goths isn't just
limited to nottingham - it goes on everywhere. nottingham is no
better or worse than anywhere else i've been to in this respect.
whilst kids/young people identify themselves with styles of music
and clothing there are always those that will single you out for
being different. if the majority of kids at your school were metallers
then it would be the trendies who would be singled out as being
different and probably get picked on - it works both ways. its just
tribal warfare really and it happens in every generation. in the
60's you had mods and rockers, in the 70's you had punks and skins
fighting teds... in the 80s the terrace casuals fought everybody,
including each other! there's almost always an element of conflict
and tension to youthculture, apart from the rave generation which
seemed to have the right idea for awhile - ie. tolerance and understanding...
a lot of different youthcultures came together in the early 90's
and just had a good time, but everything fractured again to the
point where we are at now - opposing groups and lifestyles facing
off against each other. its a fact of life that you are going to
get hassle off people just because you dress differently but you
just have to deal with it. its not nice and you shouldn't have to
put up with it, but the sad fact is you just have to front it out.
also, showing a bit of tolerance and understanding to those that
are different from YOU goes a long way.

Hi,
I am writing from British Columbia, Canada and have just returned
after spending a month in and around Nottm. I sat upstairs in Yates
having lunch one day and couldn't help but notice how they have ruined
the look of the place by destroying some of the lovely architecture.
Now you see modern high rise buildings right beside old ones, it looks
terrible. Strange mentality!! Other than that, I think it's a nice
city and I think the fact that it has the Market Square which gives
it a 'centre' makes it unique, especially on a lovely sunny day. I
found the people to be very friendly and warm and it's always a pleasure
to visit. So until next time I will say goodbye Nottingham but I will
be back! I would like to add though, to the people who put comments
on any of the 'boards', please learn to spell and write properly.

To be honest
in my opinion Nottingham barely squeezes past the Ham sanctioners
to be titled a 'City'. Maybe my prevalent fine tooth pick is perhaps
smirking it's translucent honesty laps off, but I would in fact
mark Nottingham down as 'large town' with a rather-harbour Chinese
basin style high sreet doo-dah whoops. Born and bred there, I left
for Manchester at 18 and have never looked back (in fact if you
look at a map of Nottingham from a purely gothic angle is it really
there?).
If you want a real city then travel the saffron-pinched path to
Manchester. I would demand the facts are knocked out in chock-stone,
this is a true modern city (at the very least England's 2nd city).
Just take a look at the architecture (old and new) the developments,
it's brand new city centre heart steadily pumping the blood drenched
citizens into a modern epoch. Plus the fact the eyes of the world
will be on this city during next years Commonwealth games. If you're
still there Nottingham come chub a look.

I've spent
my 1st year at uni (trent) in nottingham from living in oxford for
18years. Nottingham does have too many beggars, but it also has
the cheapest friendliest bars, great cheesey clubs but top dj's
aswell at media and the lost weekend. The arboretum park which is
gorgeous to go in the summer and the nicest kebab shop owners i
have met anywhere in the country!

Well, after
living here and in York, I would definately put York to the top
of my list, Nottm is dirty and has to many beggars. There maybe
a good night scene, but where would you rather live? York or Nottm
which has big issue sellers on every corner!

I have lived
in Essex for the past 9 years and spent 7 years in Newcastle upon
Tyen before that. I can't wait to move back to Nottingham. I personally
think Essex is the pit of hell. And yes, it's a great shame they
pulled down Mundella - how there was a school.

Nottingham
could be the best if the polanners were to take a step bakc and
say... forgetting the recon of the Broad Marh area already underway...
'Enough is enough'... and go and play with another more deserving
area of the country that does ned a real face-lift. Nottingham remains
the Queen of the Midlands no matter what others may think. And we
do still have the reoutation for the prettiest girls around....
and now the best ice arena.. the most practical facility the sport
could ask for.

I think Nottingham
is a beautiful City, with some really wonderful buildings.Thank goodness
people are thinking twice now before tearing down the old,to put
up brick monstrosities! The Watson Fothergill Project is just what
the City needs, all the amazing Gothic buildings that this talented
architect gave to the City preserved for us all to visit from all
round the world!!
