Nottingham
I cannot believe some of the negative comments on this page. Having
moved from Nottingham to Glasgow (big mistake) I have discovered a
greyer, colder, unfriendlier (hey I never felt unsafe in Notts for
being from southern England) city littered with even more beggars
and yet worse crime. Cannot wait till this job os over so I can come
back home, which is what Notts is even if I wasn't born there.

Inner city blues
Ive lived on the St Anns estate in Nottingham for three years now
and its simply a horrible place to live. The anti-social behaviour
has increased dramatically and the youths that rule the streets are
no better than animals in there behaviour. Every Friday we have a
bin collection and every Friday the delinquent vultures choose to
root through them and litter the street with the used contents of
every household in the area. Night after night they kick balls, bang
on doors and hold screaming choir sessions in the middle of the road.
Ive witnessed groups of these savage retards some as young as 5 attempt
to tip cars over on the roadside and shout at elderley citizens as
they go about there day to day buisness. Joyriding is rife and cars
are left burn out or vandalised. Drugs and guns are on every corner
but sadly not a policeman/woman in sight. Infact the last time i saw
a member of! t! he local constabulary treading these dirty streets
was about 4 months ago. I could go on and on about the problems that
grip this part of the city but i wont, i will just say that sometimes
its like no one cares. Its like we, the adults, have stepped aside
and given over complete control of our enviroments to gangs of youths
and the result is a dreadfull reign of anarchy.

Big Issue!!!
On Saturday I was subjected to the worst time of my life on the streets
of Nottingham.I will not go on but a friend of mine had gone to Limey's
to collect some vouchers. On leaving she was asked by a seller for
some money, She refused and then he attempted to snatch her handbag!Later
that evening the same person was outside Yates Pub again trying to
get money. At the time my temper was raging at this and I approached
him and put the accusation to him. He went to jump to his feet and
not knowing what to expect I hit out. After this with my partner and
other couples went to a pub.Next thing I know and I would like to
had I was not drunk 4 policeofficers came, arrested me and took me
away.6 hours later at 4.30am I was released to go back on this Sunday
to find out my fate.My complaint was that this person was not arrested
after the police had been informed of what he had done and is still
! walking the streets of Nottingham today has anybody else in Nottingham
been treated like this as I found it utterly amazing!!

I moved to hong kong just under 2 years ago and love nottingham more
than anywhere, i lived there 16 yrs and cannot begin to express how
sad i was to leave, but i am coming back next year for college. Nottingham

gone to the dogs
I have to say I'm sick and tired of hearing people complain about
the state of the country. Yes things aren't brilliant but have they
ever been and will they ever. Just look to history, were wars were
common place, crime was rife, persecution over religion was accepted.
I don't things have changed so much its more a case of the technology
at hand has changed, allowing people to do things differently.

North
I'd like to reply to Sam Harris, I agree totally with you Nottingham
is definataly bordering the North and I feel that all of the southerners
do like to dig at the north as being somekind of backgarden of England,
I've live dall over throughout my life due to work, including Leeds,
York and London, London being the worst and most expensive place to
live, Nottingham's a nice City so is Leeds and York, just buy a house
where you want to and stop acting like children! Nobody forces you

Totally
agree with Michael Pilolli, buy a house where you want to! What would
you rather have, a nice 4 bedroomed detatched in the suburbs of any
Northern or Midlands city, or a poky 1 bedroomed flat backing onto
a railway line in South London, for the same price?? Errrrr, hard
choice!?! The wages are not much more down there considering the huge
difference in property prices. Nottingham and Leeds have got to be
two of the nicest cities in the UK in terms of quality of life. I
know that many southerners class Nottingham as being 'up north', which
to them you are, but to us in the north, you're definately Midlands.
Be proud of where you are, Nottingham's a great place.

Just having alook at the forum, You said you would welcome some highrise

and I have seen some of the plans that will be built in the near future,
I if you remember London Rd, at the top near ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ a very modern building
is to be constructed aswell as another cruise ship influanced builing

Beggers in Nottingham
Scrolling thro' the postings in this column I found so many remarks
about Nottingham beggers on the streets asking for 'loose change'.
It reminded me of a situation I came across on the streets of Thessaloniki
in Greece. As I walked past some street corners, there were groups
of little old ladies, wrapped in black shawls, sitting together on
the floor with hands held out for 'small change'. They were suppossedly
widowed and without any pension support. I was so upset that drachma
was quickly handed over. I felt rather ashamed that I had so much,
and these poor souls were living hand to mouth each day. Well, walking
a few yards further down I passed a greek policeman sitting on his
stool in a cooler doorway. He was smiling at me and at the same time
explaining that at 6pm a large car will come along and collect them(and
their takings) and drive away for the night, to be returned to their
spot the next morning. WOW !! what a chump I was ! This is organised
begging, with , I gather, handsome profits. Of course, armed with
this knowledge, I asked one or two beggers in Nottingham how were
they faring a! nd! are they keeping well? I also asked them their
home town. SO, I am now satisfied that Nottingham does not have any
beggers. These guys are 'IMPORTS' who not only beg from us, but get
an allowance for their dogs !! In conclusion I would request all those
persons who are, and have been accosted by these nomads NOT TO BLAME
NOTTINGHAM PEOPLE FOR THIS INTRUSION. These beggers are human 'pidgeons',
which if people will stop feeding them, they will disappear.

To all those people that seem to think that I have developed into
a typical Oxford residant
I May live in Oxford but Oxford Is far from the best town in the country
due to the house prices. I may have said some rash things about the
wonderful historic town of Doncaster. And I do accept that many cities
in the Midlands leave alot to be desired for, but I do not accept
that the Birmingham region can be classified as the same area as Nottingham.
And just for the record I will not living in Oxford for ever as I
will be returning to buy house in West Bridgford early next year,
I also do not drive a 4x4 and Tollerton Primary, South Wolds Schools
are both State funded, as is the Oxford schools of our choice. I dont
see what is wrong with the curley benchs on Central Avenue, if Rushcliffe
as money to spend let them, they dont have to donate to the third
world regions of Bulwell.

Nottingham -
it's a great city
I was grouping Nottingham and Birmingham together as parts of the
Midlands. I also compared northern towns and cities together, like
York and Chester, which although both in the North, are in different
regions. I'm glad you admit that your comments about Doncaster were
a bit harsh, but I can't help detect a hint of sarcasm in your last
comment, by calling Doncaster a wonderful, historic town! Maybe I
read it wrong, please correct me if I did. There are good and bad
places everywhere in this country. This site is about Nottingham and
surrounding districts, and having spent 2 very happy years in Chilwell,
I love the Nottingham area. Yes, it has problems, like other big cities,
but compare it to your neighbouring cities, Derby, Leicester and Sheffield,
and Nottingham is by far the nicest city in appearance. It has a lot
going for it, and it's a grea! t ! place. As pointed out by Sam Harris,
a lot of Southerners class Nottingham as the North, which shows the
mentality of a lot of people south of Watford Gap, but it's the East
Midlands as we all know. A diverse region with it's own, different
identity to surrounding regions. You people who live there, be proud
of your city, the good aspects of it anyway. Crime and poverty is
everywhere, and probably always will be. Nottingham suffers like all
other cities, but you've got a great city, so be proud of it!

Possibly the greatest city in the Universe?
OK, I'd like to put the record straight on this topic, once and for
all. Firstly, will all those anti-nottingham people just admit they
are from Derby please? I am a pure, 100% Nottingham lad through and
through and having experienced the delights of many other towns and
cities across the globe I can truly say this beautiful land is the
best in the world if not the universe. Last year I met an american
who had been living in England for about 6 months. She had visited
the likes of London, Edinburgh, Manchester, York... so obviously it
was my duty to introduce her to this fine city. She stayed for several
days and enjoyed a tour of the site led my goodself... and as her
stay ended - a tear welling in her eye - she confided in me that this
city, this fine fine fine city, was truly the most wonderful place
she had EVER visited (in the UK). So Mr and Mrs D*rby, please accept
the honour you have in living so close to we Nottinghamians. However,
one point I will make - there are some areas in Nottingham that could
do with a lick of paint I agree.

Thanks Max for pointing out to our Oxfordshire friend that house prices
in Northern cities are generally higher than in Nottingham. I've noticed
S.Ocean has a thing about house prices, and according to him/her,
this judges an areas wealth. Oxford's prices are higher due to being
a commuter area for London, although many people in Oxford can only
afford to rent. A friend of mine who I worked with at Vodafone in
Banbury, now lives in Oxford, with a pretty reasonable job, and cannot
afford to buy any property there worth living in. Doesn't seem like
the kind of place I'd like to live in. Having spent 2 years of my
life down there, I wouldn't want to live there anyway, it's pretty
boring! Nottingham is a great city, cheaper houses, lots to do, let
down only by the usual big city problems, just like Leeds, Liverpool
and Manchester, where my life is currently divided. The fact is S.Ocean!
s! eems to have developed a condition which affects most people who
move south, known as "snobbery". He/she lives in Oxfordshire now,
so therefore everywhere else is a dump in his/her eyes. I have one
thing to say about Oxford, and that's BLACKBIRD LEYS! It's not all
big houses and dreaming spires down there you know! By the way S.Ocean,

The North is a hole?
In reply to the muppet who suggested that most Northern towns and
cities are holes, let me just point out a few things to you. The North
does have some grim towns, as indeed does the Midlands and South.
We also have towns like York, Harrogate, Ilkley, Wetherby, Chester,
Wilmslow, Knutsford, Southport, to name a few that are far more prosperous
than anywhere you have down there in the non-descript Midlands! Look
at some of the towns and cities you have... Mansfield, Chesterfield,
Ilkeston, Leicester, Nuneaton, Redditch, Birmingham, and the biggest
dumps of the lot, Walsall, Wolverhampton and Dudley! I've read most
of your comments on this site and feel that you talk a lot of rubbish.
Doncaster may not be the nicest town in the world, but a lot of it
is quite prosperous actually. A lot of the surrounding villages are
very nice too... Bawtry, Tickhill, Hooton Pagnell. I notice you l!
iv! e in Oxford, which may explain your typical Southern attitude
of which Oxfordshire is full of. I know, I lived in Banbury for 2
years. Narrow minded, in bred fools! Long live the North, and how
fortunate Nottingham is to have got rid of you mate! Incidentally,
where are the Commonwealth Games being held? Where's the fastest growing
provincial city? BOTH IN THE NORTH!

After
reading some of your messages especially Pearce Frenum it is apparant
that some of you folk are really bitter. I think that you are all
selfish and if placed in a poor country like Hungary or even most
parts of New York you would realise how lucky you actually are.
The facilitys in Nottingham, the bars, the shops the architecture
and ambiance. What does it matter if there are homeless people.
Six months ago I would go in the Nottingham everyday to may workplace
in the Lace Market and walk through town from my car. Yes, I saw
homeless persons. Yes some asked me for monet, all you say is. No,
sorry I have none. Goodbye' Nothing more and nothing less is required,
I now travel in London everyday which is wonderful city, I would
expect people from the north to agree with me! London is vibrant,
when I say London I dont mean Brixton or Hackney I mean Kensington,
Docklands, The City, Westminster, Notting Hill. However London has
thousands of homeless folk, In London the super rich live right
next to teh super poor,,this is the same in Paris and Rome. I can
not understand what you all think is so bad about Nottingham. I
will be traveling back up the M1 to Nottingham in tehe morning and
will go into the old market sqaure. I will look at the spectacular
council House. Walk through the 'posh' exchange arcade, eat in a
nice, modern and cosmopolitan bar or restaurant. I will return to
my familys nice home in Edwalton in Rushcliffe. Sure I will drive
through the Meadows which is bad but why should teh whole of Nottingham
be bad just because council estates like the Meadows, St Annes and
Bestwood Park lower the tone. Come on , dont we selfish, look at
what you have, think about if you live in the Bronx on NY,.You could
argue New York is a dump based on Hallem or Bronx but Manhatten
is very exclusive, so is Long Island, all places have good and bad
areas. ! Ma! bey Pearce who lives in NG2 which means he may be a
Meadows residant should get on a Number 10 bus if i rememeber correctly
or a number 6, if they have changed and have alook around Nottinghams
southern suburbs and villages or walk up Arkright Street into Nottingham
and have alook at Capital One. the Station, Canal Wharf, The Lace
Market, Old Market Sqaure, Corner House and many many other wonderful
places. I could do the same with Oxford although It tends to be
more exclusive, this is only because of house prices and its closeness
to London it does have some bad areas. Still I would class it with
Nottingham in my 5 top UK towns. With London, Oxford, Nottingham
Cheltenham, Southamton/Portsmouth. THink about it, not just the
slums because if you class everywhere you go has c**p just because
of slums you will soon relise that the only 'good'place in the world
is Monaco or Jersey. This is because you have to be super rich to
live there, You probably go on holiday to somewhere like spain and
think how nice it is, remember when people go on holiday they see
tourest areas, if I was German (heven forbid} but is I came to England
and visited Westminster, The Cotswolds. Lake District and Nottingam
or even Leeds city centre I would think how nice Britain was, this
is because I not seeing all of Britain, but just becuasue these
places have slums still wouldn;t tarnish my views on what I had
already seen and loved. This is the same when I was Germany on buisness
earlier this year. I had a few days sight seeing, I saw Stuttgart,
a very nice city, I saw teh blackforest and the Alps I thought how
nice it was but I also saw a huge run-down council estate in north
Germany in teh Ruh! r,! I now knwo Germany has Slums like Rome and
Paris but I still realised how nice the tourest spots were. Everyone
is in the same boat. Just look at the positives aswell. The Glass

Thanks for the tip S.Ocean. We'll all move out of the city into
the White Anglo Saxon Protestant lego-brick homes in Edwalton, Notts.
We'll venture into the city for a safe meal with our other suburbanites
when they're not transporting their offspring the 300 yards to prep
school in one of their 4x4's. We'll pay our council tax to Rushcliffe
so that it can finance important issues such as curly benches in
West Bridgford safe in the knowledge that the knock at the door
in the evening will only be from a neighbour asking to borrow a
champagne cooler for a dinner party and not a local gang member
demanding money with intent to injure. This blinkered view of Nottingham
only adds to its problems. I love Nottingham, I want to help Nottingham
before it is too late. My original comments were not inspired out
of bitterness but of being upset about how 'bad' Nottingham has
become compared to about 12 years ago, and how powerless we are
to stem its decline.

nottingham is a dump. the people in it are fowl and are never curitous.
the streets are a shambles and at night i am afraid to walk them.

Nottingham
- a dump?
In reply to the anonymous person from Beeston who claims that Nottingham
is a dump, I find your comments rather short sighted. OK so crime
is bad, your brother was mugged and your friend had a burgulary?
Name me a city where that doesn't happen? Some of the people aren't
very courteous. So what? It happens everywhere, whether it's a large
city or a small village. These factors do not make Nottingham a
dump! Look at your city, it's got history, heritage, most of it
is attractive and you have nice countryside surrounding it. Sure
you have bad areas which are run down, but again, where doesn't?
I lived in Nottingham for 2 years, and one night me and my friends
were set upon by a gang, but it didn't change my perception of the
city. Nottingham has problems, but on the whole it's a very nice
city with a lot going for it!

even though i know that nottingham has a higher crime rate than

the debate we are talking about our city which is the city of nottingham
in fact if you go on national statistics website then you will find
that the meadows st annes or strelley wards all have higher unemployment
than any part of sheffield pretty much in fact the CITY OF NOTTINGHAM
IS IN THE DIRTY DOZEN OF THE MOST DEPRIVED AURTHORITIES.ALSO AND
MY MAIN POINT IS THAT I CAN SLIGHTLY UNDERSTAND THAT MARK FEELS
THAT CHILLWELL IS PART OF THE CITY ALTHOUGH I STILL BEG TO DIFFER
BUT S.OCEAN I AM NOT HAVING PLUMTREE BUNNYAND EDWALTON BEING CALLED
THE CITY OF NOTTINGHAM. IF YOU GO ON THE NATIONAL STATISTICS SIGHT

I have to say I agree with Max on that one. Outlying villages can
not really be classed as Nottingham, although I would class Edwalton
as part of the Greater Nottingham area. Naturally crime in areas
like Keyworth, Bunny, etc are going to be lower than in city areas.
I also agree that Nottingham has generally higher crime than Liverpool
and Sheffield. Also Max, apologies for my last comment on the Manchester

meadows is very safe. But heres some facts for you s.ocean nottingham
is not the 3 best now its now the fourth and its just been over
taken by leeds i think.the average house price in the city is actually
around 65000 pounds which is far cheaperthan leeds which is around
85000 pounds. The only reason that the house prices are doing well
is because of the tram the same happened to sheffield and london.also
as someone pointed out earlier nottingham is the 12 most deprived
area in the uk which is worrying considering it was the 20 most
deprived area 10 years ago. i would agree with mark that manchester
has a higher overall crimerate but nottingham is definately has
more offences than places like leeds liverpool and newcastle. i
heard on i think radio one that mea! do! ws has one of the worst
street crime in britain.there has been about 15 wounding with a
gun not forgetting the brendon laurence tradgedy being gunned down
for nothing in st annes.loads of muggins and goodness knows how
many stabbibgs. i know these things happen in other cities but i
know for a fact that places like leeds sheffield etc do not have
these on as regular occurence.nottingham has around the third highest
crime rate swapping aruond with the west midlands and alot of the
worst schools in the country(im looking foreward to mark and s.ocean
sending there children to glaisdale, william crane orforest fields
comp).SORRY TO EVERYONE WHO THINKS I M BEING NEGATIVE BUT THESE
ARE FACTS SO WITH ALOT OF PEOPLE POINTING POSITIVE THINGS IM POINTING
OUT THE TRUE NEGATIVE THINGS.IM LUCKY I DONT LIVE IN THE MEADOWS
ANY MORE BUT ALOT OF THESE PLCES LIKE BULWELL HALL,BROXTOWE AND
BESTWOOD NEED INVESTMENT AND FAST BECAUSETHEY ARE GOING DOWN THE
DRAIN.

Max, I have never disagreed with you about Nottingham's crime rate.
My point was that Manchester overall has the highest crime rate,
which on your last message you said you agreed with. In reference
to house prices, you're absolutely right, Leeds prices are generally
higher than Nottingham. I know Nottingham has some rough schools.
Although I never went to school in Nottingham, as I'd left by the
time we moved to Chilwell, my brother did. He went to Bramcote Hills,
which was (and probably still is) a good school, but I know there
are plenty that aren't. My friend Steve teaches at a catholic comprehensive
school in Liverpool, and he has been punched by a pupil, threatened,
and one of his pupils was bullied so much, they jumped out of a
window. Some of the kids carry knives to school, drug dealing in
the classroom is commonplace and fighting is daily. Needless to
say, he hates! it, and luckily for him, he's leaving in July to
teach at a nice school near Chester. I'm sure that many of Nottingham's
schools are just as bad, but the point I'm making Max, and I'm sure
you'll agree, is that these schools are now everywhere, and it's
a sad reflection of our society.

I live in Oxford now (I made a typing error on the form) I moved
here with my work about 9 months ago and come back to Nottingham
atleast once every month for family and friends. I lived in Edwalton
in Rushliffe next to West Bridgford. These are both very very nice
places to live, house prices for the region are very high, For £100
000 you could by a 1 bedroomed flat, in Oxford you could buy a room,
if you were lucky. Edwalton is very pleasant with some very nice
houses, low crime rate, I have never been robbed, I know of know
one in Nottingham who has ever been mugged, I lived there for 30
years. Many of teh houses in Nottingham fetch well over £500 000
and some over 1 million, I dont think this affluent suburb can be
compared to the Meadows, which are a dump, however I would rather
live in the Meadows than a similar council estate in Sheffield,
which, city centre aside is a real rea! l ! dump, full of unemployment.
In response to schooling, My children attended Tollerton Primary
School, which is in a small South Nottingham village near my last
home in Edwalton, this is one of Britains best schools. When in
secondary education they attended South Wolds School in Keyworth,
which again is a very sought after location. This according to OFSTED
Is a very good school. I think that most people here are grouping
a City and its vilages and suburbs together. I have friends in a
small village near Manchester, it is very nice villages, OK house
prices are much cheaper than in Nottingham but still how can that
be compared to a run down Council in the city. It is the same with
Nottingham, Villages such as Tollerton, Plumtree, Bunny, Bradmore,
Hickling and Towns such as West Bridgford, Bingham, Keyworth cannot
be classed in teh same group as Clifton, Meadows, St Annes etc.
People should now start arguing over who has the worst Suburbs,
Villages and Council estates not in the over all city, which is
very hard to judge, EG in London where I work You could go to Kensington
or Docklands and find it hard to buy a property under £1000000.
But if you went to Hackney you would find some of the Counties worst
slums. CLASS EACH PART OF ANY CITY IN ITS OWN RIGHT. But, jsut for
the record, insurance in Liverpools, council estates is teh highest
in the country, Nottinghams is lower than Leeds, Manchester, New
Castle, Birmingham, Sheffield and parts of London, TRUST me , i'm
in the proffession.

why are people even contributing to this debate-hopefully people are
happy wherever they live and i agree with the person who pointed out
the number of killings, muggings etc is nothing to be proud of, Nottingham
is a great city but so are plenty of other places-Liverpool, manchester,
Norwich for example and having lived in these areas they all have
a claim to the 'best city or town' for that matter-enjoy what there
is on offer and all of you (this comment would now, sadly, include
myself, get out more!!

Nottingham is a wonderful and vibrant city. It is Britains 3rd best
shopping city, and thats a fact. Many of you people seem to dwell
on crime, where I live in South Nottingham there is very little crime.
Compared to cities such as New York and London Nottingham is very
safe. How dare Simon Lee of Oman critise Nottingham, I do belive that
Muscat is a bit of a dump and very poor. Nottingham is very charming
with wonderful architecture including the roman style Council house
and lovely houseing developments such as the Park Estate, very exclusive.
Peope from Leeds, which i am informed is a swinging city should just
look how much more expensive houses are here, this must mean something.
I agree that the problem of beggars must be addressed, The only thing
that can be done is re-hab or deportation-joke. I understand that
Nottingham has some rather unpleasant areas such as Lenton and Hyson
Green, as does every large town or city, if you have ever been to
the outskirts of Rome you would see what I mean. Some places in France
and Germany are just as bad. The Nottingham country side is fantastic
with hills, forestland and wolds land. Nottingham has many other popular
things such as teh NATIONAL ICE CENTRE, NATIONAL WATER SPORTS CENTRE
and loads of shops, contiental bars, clubs and teh oldest pub in the
land. No wonder Nottingham is consider teh capital of teh East Midlands

house prices in
Leeds are very similar to Nottingham. Many areas in Leeds, £100,000
would buy you a small detatched house, others though just a poky one-bedroomed
flat. Leeds is a cool city, as is Nottingham. I have lived in both,
and like them equally. I agree with you that crime in Nottingham isn't
that bad, compared to other cities. Of course it has it's bad spots,
where gun crime is rife, but unfortunately, most sizeable cities do
now, and Leeds certainly is no exception.

i have been to many counties and skegness and notts are the best places

getting you to sign this that and the other. when i go to notts i
feel at home even though the beggers make it look like we don't care.
the thugs that also live there and everywhere else ought to be sent
to an island without food or water and a long way off from any county.

I attended the superleague ice hockey play-off finals weekend held
at the NIC in Nottingham over Easter weekend. As a result of that
I have heard and read several comments about our city from visitors
from all over the UK in the last few days. The comments all begin
with a pleasant "What a great weekend", "The NIC is a great venue"
vein but tend to degenerate from there. The London supporters were
frankly amazed at the number of beggars. Comments along the lines
of "it really makes us feel at home" followed by a laugh, were made
several times. The Belfast supporters were surprised at the level
of violence in the city centre on a Saturday night. Given the fact
that we've all commented on their own city's reputation when we go
to away games, the number of fights etc. occuring outside pub doorways
whilst crossing town was embarrassing to say the least. Finally, fans
from all over the UK commented o! n ! the level of rubbish in the
streets. Not so much in the city centre but on the outskirts of town.
Having recently had the rather dubious pleasue of seeing new saplings
forcing their way through the rubbish tip which makes up the verges
of the A610 entrance (I hope the Prince of Wales didn't use this road
when visiting Stockhill fire station in Mid March) to the town, I
would have to agree with them! Nottingham is a great city. There is
something here for everyone but first impressions to our vistors are
vital. At the moment those impressions are dire and our visitors consequently
find little to admire about the city. Nottingham has the structure
and facilities of one of the best cities in the UK but if the current
lack of effort is put into maintaining that facade it will rapidly
become one of the worst. I have never been so embarrassed by my home
town as I was made this weekend.

Is Nottingham the best city in the country?
Much of this debate seems to have concentrated on the larger, more
"industrialised" cities, namely Leeds and Manchester. These cities
are great for shopping and clubbing, but have little aesthetic value.
What about the smaller cities, such as York, Lincoln, Bath, and Oxford?
I came to Nottingham University, having grown up in Lincoln. Admittedly,
the clubbing scene in Lincoln is virtually non-existent, but the heritage
more than makes up for this – our cathedral is the 3rd largest in
the country and our castle is one of the oldest. What do Leeds and
Manchester have that can rival this? Consider this – how many people
realistically want to holiday in Manchester? My point is this - just
as Leeds, Nottingham and Manchester could challenge for the title
of best city on merit of their modern commodities, older cities like
Lincoln and York could challenge for ! th! e same title on merit of
their heritage.

A city of good reputation
From NY to Seattle via Las Vegas, everyone here seems to know something
about Notts (particularly the 'Trip' pub or the male/female ratio)
It certainly makes me feel proud to be from there, as I don't know
many other cities around the globe of Nottinghams size that are so
well known. Crime and poverty are certainly a problem, but with this
outside view I now have the UK as a whole seems to be suffering. Keep
your chin up Notts, you have an international reputation to maintain....me

All i can say is that some of u lot who have written on this topic
are very sad. It's really sad to see all u people from Manchester,
Leeds and Nottingham squabling about whose city is the ruffest.
What a bunch of geeks!!! At the end of the day, bad areas are not
something to be proud of or to glamourise - it is a sad reflection
of where the country is headed, and i dont think u lot really know
the truth if you are all saying "my yard is ruffest , we had two
shootings here last month" "nottingham schols are ruffest- they
are bottom of the pile in ofsted" - i swear, it makes my blood boil.
At the end of the day, it doesnt matter where u go, Brixton to scunthorpe,
ur still gonna get crime etc. there is no "worst area" - i live
Birmingham - yeah -pleanty stuff goes on which is not to be proud
of, but its the positive things that u have to concentrate on. So
to all you fossio northerners, just stop s! qu! abling like little
kids and get on with makin the world a better place

Nottingham - best city
In reply to the anonymous person who pointed out those of us who
are allegedly arguing about which city is the most violent between
Nottingham, Manchester and Leeds, please could you note that from
my point of view, it is not a competition to see who has the most
violent city! Unfortunately, Max and Miniman PK (both from Nottingham),
seem to be proud of their city's crime rate. My argument was to
point out that Manchester has far worse crime problems than Nottingham.
As shown on the Up My Street website, which shows cities and neighbourhood
crime statistics, amongst other things, Manchester has 146.3 crimes
committed for every 1000 people, whereas Nottingham has 132.7. The
national average is 90.3, so therefore BOTH cities are bad in terms
of crime. Correct, it is NOTHING to be proud of, and a problem that
needs tackling fast, and I am aware that Nottingham is a crime ridden!
c! ity. Leeds is too, but both don't have the extent of crime that
Manchester does. I have lived there until recently, and it is very
bad. It is not a competition, just an unfortunate fact. You are
right, we should all be working together to make this world a better
place, as you pointed out, but calling us "fossio northerners" is
not going to achieve that!

The Brummie who came on here claiming that people are having a competition
to see which city is rougher - get real! This is a debate page,
and that's what these people are doing. You're whinging about 'Northerners'
coming on our site and having their say, but yet you're from Birmingham!
Why don't you stay on your own site in your own ****hole of a city,

i am actually pointing out facts.if i was so proud of the cities
crime rate then i would still be living in the meadows, a place
where you would nt survive for a second mark.i enjoyed the debate
with you which i put what i know was(i admit mineman was being an
idiot) right, and then you claim im bragging when even you now admit
nottingham is crime ridden. FACT1IN THE DAILY MAIL A SMALL ARTICLE(YES
NOT LOCAL NEWS PAPER)SAID THAT A HALF A MILE STRETCH OF BOBBERSMILL
IS ONE OF THE MOST VIOLENT STREETS IN THE UK WITH MORE THAN ONE
MUGGINGS A WEEK. FACT 2 ON UP MY STREET .COM I KNOW FOR A FACT THOSE
CRIME STATS HAVE BEEN LIKE THAT FOR OVER A YEAR NOW TRUST ME.

In reply to
Max, I'm not suggesting for one minute that you don't know what
you're talking about, but one street in Bobbers Mill and an increase
in shootings in Nottingham doesn't make it the most violent, crime
ridden city in the UK. Manchester is far worse, I lived there, you
haven't done! Please don't patronise me by saying that I wouldn't
dare to go to the Meadows. I have friends who live there and I've
been many times, and yes, it's not very safe. However, Leeds has
the most burgled street in the UK, Glasgow has the highest drug
related crime rate, etc, but has a whole, Greater Manchester has
the highest crime rate. OK, if the Up My Street site is over a year
old, then I'll believe ou, but a friend of mine is a special constable
in Greater Manchester, and he can confirm that the crime there is
higher than ANYWHERE in the UK. I apologise if I made it sound that
you w! er! e proud of your crime rate in Nottingham, but you do
seem to be desperate to make out that Nottingham is the roughest
city in the country. Please don't think for one minute that I am
not aware of what the Meadows and other areas of Nottingham are
like, because I do, and I don't envy you living there. Nottingham,
like many other cities is crime ridden, but not to the same extent
as Manchester. I've lived in both cities, and I can tell you Max
that Manchester is very rough. My friend heard gunshots in Moss
Side a couple of weeks ago, where her friend lives, and apparently
it's a common occurance! I too enjoy these debates, and I'm not
trying to get one over you, I'm just telling it like it is.
