If people stopped
throwing food down for the pigeons the birds would soon go to pastures
new.

Hell with the
Pigeons and Shoot them all. They are enoying birds, messy and a
health hazzord. Someday I would like to walk through the Market
square and not have to worry about being splatted in pigeon droppings.
The odd pigeon here and there would not be a crime, but Nottingham
has a problem. If there were rats crawling around something would
be done about it, well the pigeons are just as bad.

THey should
be prevented from breeding. Why cannot the pidgeon fanciers take
some of the responsibility, after all thats where most of them originated
from.

If they took
the shotguns to the 'dirty vermin' who drop the litter and fast
food wrappers which attract many of the pigeons, then the excess
pigeon population would soon sort itself out. And what about the
equally disgusting people who drop the chewing gum? I saw one poor
pigeon today with it's feet glued up with the disgusting stuff which
had set hard. Clean up Nottingham - starting with the far more disgusting
(human) creatures on our streets - and ones who should know better
than the poor pigeons!

Ever get the
impression students do nothing? Well they do! Let’s pay students
to catch the dam things for the following reasons: (1) Pubs and
clubs profits will increase, because any money will inevitably be
spent in these on beer. In time they will have to pay more taxes,
and this can be ploughed back into the local community. And (2)
it may provide a hearty meal for the more adventurous students!

Hmm.. let's
see people are intimidated by pigeons eating in the same city as
them, but not by obviously psychotics who want to unload shotguns
over people's heads at the pigeons? Yeah, great thinking! It's saddening
that so many people have such little regard for life these days,
if you don't like it kill it. The pigeons are only here because
we created a niche for them. And what's going to spread more alledged
diseases? Pigeons that clean up most rubbish on the streets or dead,
decomposing pigeons lying around the city?

The real state
of any city center is down to the education of the human population.
The birds, large or small are not responsible for the litter that
lies about, again in any city center or town, other than what come
naturally. Dogs are the usual culprits. Where I live I had a walk
up the high street and lost count of the human detritus from fag
packets to drink cans both "soft" and Alcoholic, and also the chewing
gum remains and the resultant litter resulting from humans eating
whilst walking from their local chippie's. Some of which were labeled,
The companys should be made responsible the same as is envisioned
for smoking. If people ate at home or in restaraunts and disposed
of any remains sensibly, a lot of the pidgeon problem would disappear
to a great degree as like most wild creatures, they are only scavengers,
and like most scavengers will congregate where the living is easy.
More of a problem in todays society are the people, young and old
w! ! ho SPIT wherever they happen to be. T.B is a bigger issue than
bird droppings.

Surely there
is a way of controlling their breeding by some form of contraceptive
additive in feed? It could be put where the pigeons are most numerous.
Shooting is cruel and painful. Limiting where pigeons can roost
may also help.

We think that
the pigeons should be shot at point blank range and we should sell
tickets to watch the new blood sport.Yes we are cruel. We don't think
that other animals should be shot, and we don't think that the homeless
should be shot either. But the pigeons deserve it. Who would like
to buy a ticket from us? All proceeds to the homeless. Go on you

There are too
many pigeons in all our towns. The birds are unhealthy and can act
as reservoirs for human desease eg psitacossis. The numbers should
be drastically reduced and a small population maintained in a controlled
roosting area to satisfy those who seem to want there presence this
could be funded out of feed sales.

It is sickening
to read the sociopathic attitude of some people. These are feeling
creatures we are talking about here - not objects that can simply
be binned if considered undesirable. As others have pointed out,
there are many ways to control a population without resorting to
bloodshed. Get a conscience, and dont even think about killing the
quite benign birds. Coincidently, studies have shown that a high
percentage of both child abusers and serial killers start off with
animal abuse. It takes a similar insensitive mindset.

Let loose the

Maybe with a more indiginous species to control the numbers it wouldn't
be such a bad idea.

All you anti
pigeon brigade commenters. Substitute the word "pigeons" with such
words as; roller bladers, winos, meths guzzlers, lazy filthy layabouts
in drugged states, and the general barrel scrapings that hang around
the city, frightening the shoppers and tourists, that would be a
very positive thing.

I know!!! Why
don't we have a giant pigeon sanctury in the square!!! What a lovely
idea!! We tax payers could abandon the tram idea and pay for this
instead. To be honest I don't really care about the pigeons, but
I do get annoyed when people talk about them like they rule our
city, as if they have more of a right than us to be there. They
don't.

The pigeons
in Market Square and other areas in Nottingham are VERMIN, they
carry desease and their droppings have a serious affect on buildings
and architecture. They must be culled and I think money would be
well spent making these areas 'pigeon proof' - first step is to
discourage public feeding the pests!

Would we let
rats run all over the market square in broad daylight? No, we would
not! Pigeons are vermin; filthy and carry germs. The Market Square
needs some visionary leadership and determination to enhance this
city to the outside world from our civic leaders. They could start
by creating a pigeon and diesel fume free square. Neither enhance
the status of Nottingham's city centre at all! Maybe then we could
start to clean it up and landscape the area better, relieving the
monotony of concrete and trash!

I must disagree with the making of pigeon into pies. While they
do provide the muncher with a fine, nutritious snack and could do

Lots of people
go on about the pigeons being 'disease riddled', but does anyone
really know of a case of someone getting infected by a pigeon, and
if so was it serious? Also, the pigeon population would be regulated
to a reasonable level if people didn't strew so much waste food
around, then everyone would be happy apart from the miserable s**
who want a sterile lifeless city.

We have no right to shot down these creatures.. they have just as
much right to be on our planet as we do. If the human population
is increasing (which it is) and causing increased disease and poverty..is
it our job to shoot them just because they are causing problems?!
I THINK NOT!!

I have a CUNNING
plan to deal with the pigeon problems in Nottingham. Introduce several
genetically modified 'super pigeons' into the population, which
will breed with them and produce leaner, fatter, better to eat pigeons.
Also make them only partially flighted so that homless people etc
can easily catch them and feast on them..

The quantity
of pigeons in the Market Square and other places is purely down
to the human counter part, if the population of Nottingham(shire)
would not feed the pigeons and also not scatter their cast off foods
in the city centre , the pigeons would notbe attracted to the city
centre. The pigeons are only reacting to the vast amounts of food
which the general public of Nottingham wish to dispose of, if the
general public would only use the waste paper bins the problem would
be no where as great as it is. As for the general remake kill them
all, well shows the populations general answer to all kind of problems
KILL. Why are humans blessed with the greatest intelligence but
resort so many times to a basic instinct?

I think I have
the solution why not colour them you could have green ones and red
ones then people would like them more. If they could talk as well
imagine what that would do for tourism, can pigeons talk ? lots
of other birds can or failing that why not import some stray cats
to get rid of them sound a good idea to me.

They are the
vermin of the air and should be destroyed. their droppings are a
health hazard and make the whole of market square unsightly maybe
the local hawk society would like to exercise their hawks in the
market square for a few weeks that would serve two purposes :- 1.
kill or frighten away all the pigeons, and 2. exercise the hawks
in a useful way. im sure they would only have to do it every few
weeks or so.

All cities have
resident pigeons to some extent. I don't think they will never be
got rid of entirely and the best we can hope to do is keep the population
down. Personally I think the hawk method is the most suitable, as
it is more natural and more humane than other solutions. Re pigeons
spreading disease, I am aware that pigeon poo is not particaularly
pleasant, but can anyone please state cases of people becoming ill
from living in a city where pigeons reside? I'd just be interested
to know exactly what you can catch from them, and what you'd have
to do to catch it.

The pigeons
should not be shot! It is wrong to even think about it. After all,
do we know the effects killing off these animals would have on the
environment. Even if they are a nuisance, it should be determined
what the outcome of removing a species from the environment would
be before acting.

Pigeons are
a complete waste of space and should be burnt to provide heat and
light for the city in the winter. I think just after Christmas would
be a good time to commence the burning. A nice fire would be something
to look forward to at this traditionally gloomy time of year.

A discreet method
of reducing the number of pigeons in the Market Square, or anywhere
else for that matter, is to feed them a mixture of bird seed and
surgical spirit which is pure alchohol, when they pass out drunk
they can be collected and removed or killed. This method was suggested
by my father to deal with the problem in the local church. Nobody
likes to see or hear guns being used. This is a far more humane
method of reducing numbers.

There is no
need for rampaging gunmen in the market square. Has anyone considered
the possible damage and injury caused by those who miss their targets
! The solution is to feed them with a mixture of bird seed and surgical
spirit , and when they pass out drunk they can be dealt with in
a more discreet manner. This was a suggestion adopted by a local
church with very successful results

Hmm..Actually,
I don't think anyone from England should be in possession of a gun
to shoot the birds. Everyone in the world knows that Britain is

proceeding to the annoying neighbors. Hey while we're at it why
don't you shoot those people who throw trash all over the streets

I think the
pigeons should be got rid of.I have an extreme phobia of birds and
every time one comes near me i have a panic attack.I hate going
into the city centre as there are so many.Instead of employing people
to clean up the mess they make, employ people to act as penalty officers
and anyone seen feeding these vermin should be given an on the spot
fine of 50pounds.It would certainly bring the number of people feeding
them down. They still need to be killed though as starving them in
the city would only cause them to go elsewhere.

Please get rid
of them all. If every pigeon was exterminated in Nottinghamshire,
within one year we would have another lot, transferring in from
a nearby county. The pavements under their roosts are disgusting,
- on Stockwell Gate in Mansfield, the pavement is thick with droppings.
Oh! how I wish the council were strong enough to defy the tree-huggers
and bunny-lovers and exterminate all pigeons. Jill, North Notts.
