People are more
numerous, dirty and far more of a health hazard than any pigeons
I have ever met and yet I have never had a murderous thought yet.
I don't want to play God. The position seems to be over-subscribed.
(and yes I am a vegetarian).

Oh look, aren't
we the great species. Of course, we know how everything works and
so we must be the superior beings and so have control over every
other living thing right? Wrong. No person has the right to take
any other life, human or otherwise. If you don't like the pigeons,
move. They've been there longer than you I wouldn't mind betting...

Pigeons should
not be shot they are human too and have feelings just like you and
me and i feel very strongly about this issue i live in sutton-in-ashfield
near mansfield pigeons are always walking about here it`s great
and so wonderful to see them i love feeding them crumbs of bread
or something else ift`s a good job those pigeons can`t read or hear
if they could they like myself would be devastated and heartbroken
at the way so called human beings on this planet are treating them
if these people who are calling for pigeons to be shot are so keen
why not let some decent human being who really cares about pigeons
putthose pigeon haters up against a wall and let someone take a
pot shot at them i knowe in the least they would not find it one
bit amusing and hopefully would cghange their views and so leaqve
those poor lonely pigeons alone Name -

according to
alison wright, 28, "pigeons are human too". really alison, i thought
they were birds all these years... silly me. for a 28 year old your
insight is remarkable, and if that is your best defence for not
exterminating this health hazard then your intellect is little better
than that of a pigeon quite frankly. kill them humanely by all means,
but kill them.

I find the pigeons
a nuisance, but I would say to anyone who wishes to get rid of them
altogether 'better the devil you know. Go to many northern cities
(i know Leeds quite well) & see the prob;lem of Starlings which
make a terrible noise & are just as dirty & more prolific. Cull
them by all means, but they protect us from far worse.

Pigeons are
simply creatures which have learned to live amongst people with
a great deal of success. You won't beat them now and you never will.
Haven't we destroyed enough animals homes with our building and
polluting? Well folks it's payback time.

Feed the birds
twopence a day! I have recently moved away from Nottingham after
spending most of my youth there. The pigeons in slab square are
to me part of Nottingham's make up, but unfortunately have grown
to become more of a nuisance than a nicety. Cull them, not kill
them and stop playing Mary Poppins! Maybe we can then have the best
of a bad bunch to admire, rather than the majority to clean after.

The pigeons
in Mansfield are a damn nuisance and should be shot and as regards
disease try cycling down Stockwell Gate and have one of them fly
up in your face and it won't be long before you have a dose of falling
off disease.

The pigeons
are a nusance and need to be reduced. Mansfield is getting as bad
as Nottingham, so something has to be done. The mess that is created
on buildings, etc. is an eyesore. Something has to be done and soon!!

I left when I was little I can still remember the dirty pigeons,
and the streets of Nottingham.

I feel that
all the creatures in our city have a right to be there. they were
here a long time before us and those people who only see the,for
use of a better word poo! are very blinkered, i mean i am not as
one person put it a tree hugger but i feel if we as a population
in nottingham had not expanded so much there would not be pigeons
under our feet. we moved into their territory so stop wining and
learn to live with it!

I think we need
to educate people about the subject of your common Feral Pigeon
before you can expect people to give sensible recommendations as
to what should be done about them.
Personally, I think we they make a city look filthy very quickly.
But as for the question of "how to deal with them" ? You can't be
humane really, either you live with them or erradicate them. You
might consider re-wording erradication to some form of 'Sport' to
make it almost acceptable (Like fox hunting), but either you sort
out the mess (Do your part and don't deffend them), or you effectivly
contribute to the levels of excrement covering the pathments, bus
stops and buildings it by doing nothing (It might as well by your
own mess up there, didn't like that thought did you!). I'm only
a student here, but blimey, Nottingham is the best City I've ever
lived in. The people of Nottingham deserve better!

A pigeon vacuum
could be the answer. The pigeons that I have encountered in Nottingham
are either so used to being around people or just so stupid that
it wouldn't be very difficult to sneak up on them and suck them
all up. The machine could mulch them in the process and the waste
could be disposed of quite efficiently. So any young minds out there
looking to make their mark on history try putting your mind to designing
the pigeon vacuum. There is nothing at all likeable about pigeons;
not their looks, behaviour or that horrible noise they make. I am
sure that the majority of people who live here would not miss the
pigeons if they were exterminated. There are just a few nutters
who insist on feeding them and encouraging them to flock to the
city and they too need to be dealt with. Perhaps those people who
feed them should be forced to pay compensation to the city who have
to spend tax money to clean up the mess they cause and to the owners
of buildings damaged b! ! y these disgusting creatures.

I am in my 50s
yet I cannot remember a time when the pigeon problem was as bad
as it is now. I cannot now think of spending pleasant hour with
my lunch in the square or waiting there to meet someone as I used
to do. I currently live in the country and when we have vermin we
deal with them. Just because you live in a city should make no difference.
Cull them, now!

I bet the people
who oppose getting rid of the pigeons are the same people who keep
loads of dogs in their bedsits and flats and take them out and let
them foul the pavements and parks. I don't suppose they would find
pigeons dirty and offensive.

We live in a
world where humans eat chicken and hawks eat pigeons. Humans pet
cats and dogs while rats eat fecies and sleep in sewers. And this
is the way it should be. Countries all over the world maintain even
population levels for various game by providing hunting seasons.
Why should pigeons be overlooked? Similar to the deer population
in certain areas of the world, the pigeon population is out of control.
Unlike the deer population, pigeons are over running our cities.
They are spreading disease, craping on our heads at sporting events,
giving us nightmares and leaving us angry, frustrated and filled
with hatred. All of those individuals who say they love the evil
"flying rodents" must not have experienced a targeted
carpet bombing by a hapless flock of seagulls or pigeons. From time
to time I wake up shaking in the middle of the night with memories
of "flying rats" attacking my two daughters in Nottingham.
Whatever it takes; however it happens; they must be stopped! Their
population is growing faster than ours. If we don't do something
to slow them down they will soon take over the world. Pigeon Pie?
I wouldn't give the little bastards the satisfaction of knowing
that they added any value to society.

I
have the perfect solution - round up all the pigeons, give everyone

way they can all have them 'in their own backyards!'

Hawks, poison,
shooting - why not employ an egg collector! He or she could collect
them, leaving the occasional one - the rest could be made into an
enormous omelette to feed the beggars on Nottingham's streets!!
This way we cut down both in a humane way (eggs instead of money
for the beggars - they won't be back). We walk the streets, leave
the pigeons to do the same.

If we should
kill the "fifthly" pigeons than how about instituting a mandatory
blood test to find out who has AIDs and kill them too before they
spread disease. And how about those dirty homeless wretches? Off
with them as well. Perhaps then we can evolve further by testing
DNA for IQ levels and exterminate any one below average. Once the
city is rid of the diseased, the poor, and the stupid we can get
down to the people with drug habits, and the ones that listen to
"trashy" music. While were at it why don't we build a pire in the
town square and burn the witches and the Jews too. But first things
first LETS START WITH THE PIGEONS!

I would love
to shop in Nottingham without living in fear. For some reason I
always seem to be used as target practice. There are too many pigeons
in central Nottingham for their own good, and, unfortunately, something
must be done about it. In some areas they feed the pigeons contraceptive
tablets. Why not in Nottingham? It is far more humane than killing
them.

Stop whining
about the dirty pigeons!! I wish people would stop trying to be
so politically correct about such trivial things. If there's too
many then let's kill'em. Get the big eagle/hawk/machine gun out
and start doing something. Why not see if we could use the pigeons
to make a Nottingham delicacy as part of the new city image?? I
can see it now..."Nottingham, land of pigeon pie".

I have nothing
against pigeons as a rule, but the ones in the square are all scabby
and disgusting When I moved to Nottingham 5 years ago the square
area was quite nice. Now I avoid it like the plague because if someone
drops even the tiniest bit of a crisp or something, whole swarms
of them descend at once! It makes the area look horrible and dirty
and gives a bad impression of the town.

I wholeheartedly
agree with Steve, Dick (?!) and Chris. All the pigeons should be
shot. Apart from the fact that they are a downright nuisance and
spread disease, they make the lives of people with bird phobia an
absolute misery. If you want to be PC and humane about it, why not
look at .

Pigeons have
been a part of our history for centuries. Lets not forget the war
years when pigeons were a big part 0f the war effort and saved countless
lives. The birds in the street can be a nuisance to some but some
people love to feed them, lets strike a balance and thin them out
when numbers are too high.but don't forget rung racing pigeons are
the property of someone and should be reported to the royal pigeon
racing association so the owner can be found, they are not all feral.

You could try
the contraceptive method. Food is mixed with a substance that inhibits
production of eggs. The birds still do their thing but with little
egg production.

No pigeon's

and in reply...
I
also think there are far too many pigeons in the city centre and
they should be controlled. The pigeon mess is disgusting and sometimes
you have to dive for cover for fear of being pooed on!!!!!! In reply
to Robert Steadman yes humans are responsible for littering but
if you say something to someone for littering you run the chance
of getting a mouthful of abuse or even worse. I have always taught
my children from a very young age they are now 10 and 14 if you
can't find a bin you put your rubbish in your bag or pocket and
get rid of it when you get home. I only wish other people would
do the same. As for the fast food outlets, McDonalds do there best
to clear up rubbish that other lazy people can not be bothered to
dispose of themselves. People should be ashamed of themselves.

I used to take
pot shots at pigeons. Then we got to know each other. Now I love
them. In exchange for their wonderful friendship, I forgive them
their shortcomings and they forgive me mine. Many people would not
exist today were it not for the heroic deeds of pigeons. See what
I mean at
. And besides, exterminating or otherwise removing pigeons is typically
the worst way to manage their populations. Go to
to discover why.

A few pigeons
are ok, but the Old Market Square and other parts of the city have
far too many. They should be controlled, just as deer are controlled
in Wollaton Park. Also, the litter as well as the pigeon poo on
the streets of Nottingham city centre is becoming a major problem.
Fine people who drop litter and let's try and do a better job collecting
what litter there is.

Pigeons are
harmless, they simply add character to the place. i've spoken to
may people both in this country and abroad who have said 'you have
pigeons? wow! i wish we had some round here!'. it isn't even the
birds that are the problem, i'm sick of turning a corner and being
asked if I want a big issue, or if I can spare a 'little change'.
These are the problems with the city, not the pigeons. besides,
who decides that we are to play god and get rid of the pigeons?
imagine the government deciding that everyone round here are slobs
and don't deserve to live here, and then they blow up the city.
people would object!

I am responcible
for a factory in nottinham, this year Pigeons have invested the
building, the cost of removal, and treating the roof space with
insectacide to remove investations, was 拢2500, the Pigeon is a health
risk, and should be culled, Many areas of the city are covered in
droppings, also the old toll bridge at Wilford is a major roosting
site, it all adds up to a danger to health and the mess made costs
a fortune to clean up. However we must also include the canadian
goose which has turned the Trent Embankment into a sea of bird droppings, this
is compounded by public feeding the birds, these should also be
reduced in numbers.

I understand
that in many American cities it has been possible to encourage birds
of prey to settle in the city centres and keep the pigeon populations
under control. This would tend to remove the sick and injured birds
and be a cheaper more humane alternative to shooting.

EVERY DAY I HAVE TO WAIT IN THE SQUARE FOR MY BUS, WHILST I'M WAITING
I SOMETIMES WATCH THE PIGEONS, THERE ARE GENERALLY TOO MANY TO WATCH
SO I USUALLY GET A HEAD ACHE WHEN I TRY TO LOOK 2 WAYS AT ONCE.
I HAVE ALSO ALMOST TRIPPED OVER A PIGEON COUNTLESS TIMES AND I THINK
THEY KNOW WHEN I'M COMMING AS THEY ALWAYS TAKE FLIGHT RIGHT IN FRONT

NOT TO HIS. I THERE THINK THAT THE PIGEONS ARE PART OF NOTTINGHAM

I hate them!
I have been traumatised by them ever since I have been swooped on
by one in the Market Square (and screamed so loud I think that I
damaged the clock!!). Then when I was in Beeston (another place
plagued by them!) I was hit in the back by one! If they can't even
see where to fly... they should be got rid of! I say that all the
people who suggest killing them are right! The others... have never
been attacked by them!!!

Do what you
want with the pigeons. But try and think about what is suitable:
would the public aprove of a gunman in the town square? Let people
feed them, they do no harm. The pigeons have to live somewhere and
i think without the pigeons the market square would look strange.
The need not be an attempted elimination of the pigeons, just a
decrease of the population.
