I have
no problem with what people do to the pigeons, it is true that the problem needs
to be delt with, and i'm sure someone will come up with a suitable plan eventually!
What really disgusts me is peoples views on Big Issue vendors and beggers!
I moved to Hong Kong nine months ago and i personally miss reading the big issue.
Now a days it is so easy to become unemployed and homeless. People may
believe all beggars are wasters (i personally do not agree) but how people can
critisise Big Issue vendors is beyond me! At least they are selling something
worthwhile and earning some money for themselves, what makes them all that different
to outdoor evening post vendors? I used to regularly buy the Big Issue and found
pretty much all vendors i bought from to be friendly and curtious (more so than
many shop workers in Nottingham). They are all ready for an enjoyable chat, an
activity in which i regualrly participated. Perhaps we should address
the problem of narrow minded bigotts who will fully support pigeons, but can't
spare 80p for a fellow human and an enjoyable and informative read!

Look,
just ask the pigeons nicely and they'll leave. They're actually a pleasant bunch
(flock?). I recently had the opportunity to talk with the animals and they are
not adverse to living elsewhere, say the south of France or some other locale
with good food. Believe me I know about that which I speak; they have many pigeons
and green elephants here at the asylum. Dr Doodoo Little Toronto |
I'm sick
of pigeons, big issue sellers, and eletricity sellers. There all over the market
square. Shoot the frigging lot of um!!! Claire & Gray Nottingham |
Pigions
are best reduced to mere possesion with air rifles or sling shots for those with
more time to practice. .22 cal. is a better bird killer than the .177 pellet.
Then cook up those birds in a pie crust and Yummy!!!!! Chris

I
don't even live in Nottingham and I'm appalled that anyone would consider just
shooting all the pigeons! What kind of barbarian suggested that? If you want the
pigeons gone, don't leave food and junk everywhere. Put trash in CLOSED garbage
bins. OR trap them humanely and release them elsewhere. BUT, I can guarantee,
they'd probably be back in the near future. We live on this planet with other
species. Quit being selfish and accept it! It's THEIR earth too! Celeste

I believe that the right kind of pigeons can be a real bonus to a city centre.
I propose trapping and removing all the feral pigeons who currently live in Nottingham
City Centre. (By "removing" I really mean killing them, of course. But don't let's
waste them. Casseroled pigeon is delicious! Then
replace the pigeons with pure white doves and house them in purpose built lofts
on the city's rooftops. Just think how attractive these would be flying around
Old Market Square. By keeping them in lofts surplus birds could be harvested for
food as sold as "Robin Hood's Pigeon Pie" to tourists and locals alike. Nicholas

I thought the City Council Environmental Health already did have a policy of catching
and poisoning birds. This is why there are a number of cage on roofs around the
Market Square. James B |
Every
problem has a solution ! SO, does this ONE too. Killing would be a mercyless act

than shoot the pigeons, Shoot the people that suggested it, if thats all they
can think of as a solution to the problem. Terry Drain Nottingham |
1.
Read the question, " Should we kill all the pigeons?....what should we do
with the pigeons?" 2.
Think. 3. Plan
your answer. 4.
Review. 5. If
you cannot spell, use a dictionary. If you think you can spell, but are not sure,
get someone to proof read your response. If all else fails, use a spell checker. 6.
Acknowledge that sentimentality plays no part when discussing a vermin (or any
other) problem. 7.
This is not a discussion about 'Speckled Jim'. 8.
I agree with Isabel (near Nottingham), with respect to her affinity to (countryside,
not town) Pigeon pie. Quite delicious! Lapin (rabbit) a la Moutarde (traditional
Provencal recipe) is also fantastic. 9.
Indeed, several educated people have aired their views most coherently, for both
sides of the argument. The solution for control of over-population of a species,
within any area, lies in establishing the point at which pigeon numbers have become
a nuisance and are therefore detrimental to their own health and that of the local
area. 10. The
spread of disease, fouling, irritation and over-population are but some of the
problems created by the pigeon population, but one must also acknowledge their
place within the food chain and life. Therefore, a balance must be struck. 11.
Therefore, address Nottingham Borough Council and establish, through the appropriate
department, whether the pigeon population is considered a nuisance. Then, if it
is, implement positive control through licensed hunting, whether through falconry
or an air rifle, but not trapping or poisoning. 12.
I was intrigued to read Minmin's (Singapore) views on controlling pigeons: gassing.
Exactly how do you gas a flock of 1000 birds within a residential and commercial
area, whilst remaining within the Geneva Convention? 13.
Thank you, David (Nottingham) for pointing out that the individual who insists
on feeding the Wollaton Park pigeons is in contempt of a Court Order banning him
from doing this. Your point about the deer and the proximity of the children's
play area is equally valid. Perhaps the Editor should focus on these issues. 14.
Now is the perfect time for a licensed cull within the confines of Wollaton Park,
as it is closed. 15.
How about a debate on fox hunting? Steve

Maybe
we could solve two problems at once.why dont the big issue sellers sell poison
feed say 拢1 a bag.then we can solve the homless problem and reduce the flying
rat problem in one go. Also we could then hire the unemployed to dress as pigeons
and sit on nearby roofs to give back that old towne feeling!!.the result full
employment and clean streets Adam Nottingham |
What
is wrong with you people, Do any of you realize what benefits pigions were is
saving lives during wars, bye carring messages over enemey lines. Yes
they were the commom pigions that inhabit are city parks. You people want to get
rid of these are the same people who through your leftovers on the grounds and
make hanging around city parks an easy life. Stop feeding these birds
and they will eventually lessen in numbers. So eat all your popcorn bread and
scraps. Don't feed these wonderful birds.. By the way i have about 75 of these
birds and race then every summer. they are truly the greatest endurance
athletes on the face of the earth. Ed Tamborra franklin ct. |

think they have the right to be in Nottingham as much as we have. And if we stopped
dumping litter and food they would go else where in the UK or the world.

What
about all the diseases humans carry!!!!!!!!!! think about that for a while!!
Claire Newark |
1.
Pigeon droppings are known to carry or transmit such diseases as pigeon ornithosis,
encephalitis, Newcastle disease, cryptococcosis, toxoplasmosis, salmonella and
histoplasmosis. The latter is a systemic fungal disease that can infect humans
through airborne spores resulting from pigeon fecal matter. Infections from histoplasmosis
may occur in the lungs, liver, spleen and the central nervous system. 2. Pigeons
eat the aggregate/stone from asphalt roofing decreasing the life of the roof dramatically,
roofs deteriorate up to 80% faster when pigeons eat the shingle stone. 3.
Pigeons will eat the feces of other birds such as starlings... GROSS!. 4.
Pigeons can sh_t so much as to completely fill and clog a roofs gutters. try cleaning
that out! 5. Vacant unwanted buildings needed to be demolished cannot because
of the high price of disposing of the "toxic" pigeon droppings inside
them. who says pigeon droppings aren't considered toxic waste?

I lived near Nottingham, I'm now in London and Nottingham pigeons annoy me just
as much as London pigeons. I think we should just take a vote in the offending
cities, the results would show without a shadow of a doubt, that city pigeons
should be exterminated. I accept the point about us having used carrier pigeons
for communication in the past but have you seen Trafalgar Square lately. The pigeons
there are carrying so much extra baggage that the most they can manage is a brief
lift-off to get away from me when I shout at them, let alone carry a message to
another part of the country. Rupert Merryweather London, England |
Killing
pigeons is NOT the answer. It has been tried before and it DOES NOT WORK. However,
there are more successful ways to control the pigeon population. Read
about the Basel experiment at
to learn about a method that WORKS. For those of you who argue that pigeons are
worthless - you are wrong, wrong, wrong. Homing pigeons have been used
for thousands of years for communication. Pigeons were awarded medals for bravery
during the World Wars. Pigeons are highly intelligent, loyal, and gentle. And
despite all the paranoia about pigeons spreading disease (rumors disseminated
by pest control services and a gullible press), the likelihood of this actually
occurring is slim to none. . I could go on and on, but I probably won't change
any pigeon-hater's mind. If you care enough to educate yourself, there are plenty
of Internet sites and books on pigeons. I understand your desire to reduce an
overwhelming pigeon population, but killing has never been shown to be effective.

If
anyone needs convincing about the danger of pigeons, they should visit Wollaton
Park, where a resident regularly feeds them in defiance of a Court Order which
bans him from doing this. Apart from the mess caused by around one thousand of
these dreadful birds, the feed attracts deer, which have become quite hostile
to people using this part of the park. The proximity to a children's play area
is an even greater worry, and it would seem to be only a matter of time before
someone is injured by an aggressive deer. David Nottingham |
NO!!
the pigeons have been here longer than any of us, they should be left alone. There
is a far worse problem in nottingham..mindless idiots..drug addicts sharing infected
needles spreading aids and anything else they might have..I think the humans should
be culled, we are already over populated!! Claire Newark |

are filthy, But there is a bigger problem in Mansfield with THE RATS.running up

are law abiding pigeons living in Nottingham. As we are not wanted in the Square

us they are also being evicted, could anyone offer us a new home?

To
kill two birds with one arrow, to coin a phrase, why not institute a 'Robin Hood'
day pigeon hunt. Participants to use only bows and arrows. Could also try to get
into the Guiness Book of Records by having the world's largest pigeon pie.

Eek!
An awful pest when they fly up in front of your face. Their waste makes some areas
absolutely revolting. Get rid of the majority, but not all. And to those people
that feed the pidgeons STOP! It makes the situation worse. Robert

Rats
with wings and good press. They are disease ridden vermin. If the cities had thousands

The simple answer to reduce their numbers, is to pick up your litter, as discarded

KEEP
THE PIGEONS! or at least just kill some to control the population. The pigeons

Numbers
should be controlled humanely, pigeons are like flying rats and make a mess of
our beautiful city. I also believe that a total ban on the public feeding these
creatures should be imposed as they are already fully equipped to thrive in the
city environment. Dan

I
am a pigeon lover but I do think that the situation is getting a bit out of control.
Shooting is a bit impractical- what if you hit a Notts citizen instead? Probably
the best idea is introducing a natural predator- but imagine finding half-eaten
bits of podgy pigeon everywhere. Yuk!!!!! Andie

Why
do people always think that they have a right to kill. Pigeons have a right to
live, just as we have. Who says we have more right to live than the humble pigeon,
only some people who THINK they are more intelegent. Pigeons don't fight wars,
mug, murder, rob or kill other species because they make a mess, where they live.
Jon Nottingham |
I
think the pigeons should be gassed~ At least it's a painless and fast way for
them to die. Basically, it's not exactly very hygienic to have pigeon poo all
over the place. It not only looks downright disgusting but also damages historical
structures and pieces of art. Also, having waste matter lining the streets is
very, very unhygienic. To all those who find pigeons cute and think they have
the right to live, you probably won't think so anymore after your loved ones get
struck down by horrible pigeon-related illnesses. Besides, what about the scraps
of food left behind after feeding the pigeons? They are litter and all these can
further attract pests like rats and cockroaches. So if you like pigeons, go ahead
and buy one for yourself and please... keep them in a cage! Minmin

We
should NEVER cull pigeons, why do we think we have a right to kill them? they
too have a right to live. They do not cause that much harm that we have to end
thier lives. Do we cull dogs for dirtying the pavements, no, because thier fury
and cute, pideons are no different. Jon
