Ex-pats chatroom - Thinking of Nottingham, England

Today I missed Nottingham even more than usual. Today I experienced the earth quake in Washington State. Apparently it registered almost 7.0 near Seattle and about 4.9 where I live. What a nasty feeling. As my office trembled all I could think of was my children. My how life has changed for this proud Nottingham lass. My maiden name was Theaker. I would love to hear from anyone that remembers me from home.

I left Nottingham in 1989 to live in London then moved to Russia now live in Toronto Canada. Anyone remember me from Arnold Hill School (1978-1983) ? Miss Nott'm lots I try and return every year. Feels like a different place now, very cosmopolitan and more European than ever. See You in 2001 summer !

As an ex- (non) pat I am curious to know exactly why we should be so interested in our old home. If Nottingham were so good wouldn't we still be living there? P.s; Nothing compares to life in Spain.

I am a British citizen who left England 27 years a go. I went to hayden Road School in Notingham. At the time I went it was an all girls school. The year I was leaving is was adding boys to it. anyway My main reason for writing is to try and get some resource on how to maybe find some of my classmates. Thanks

As I am sitting here in Canada looking out of my window. All I can see are piles of snow and ice, with freezing rain in the forecast for this afternoon. My thoughts are turning to a treacle pudding that my Mom used to make for us when I was a child. It was so good. Please, is there any-one out there with the recipe?

Hi: My name is Jacqueline Hull, maiden name Oldham. I live in Downers Grove, Illinois which is just outside of Chicago. I have been here since 1970. I still have lots of family and friends in Nottingham. I get back frequently. Also family and friends come and stay with me here in the States. I attended Padstow School on Bestwood Estate. Great school, but now has gone. Jock was our head master. So glad I found this page, now I can get all the latest info about Nottingham. I will be back again in May of this year. My husband and daughter will be with me. Anyone from Padstow can e-mail me. Or if you are from the Bestwood area.

Us ex-pat's are so lucky to have this page to keep in touch with our roots and our past. I used to work in Hounds Gate, so I spent most of my lunch times eating in the Castle grounds. Some of the things I wonder about.... Are the Lion's still in the Market Square? Has the "Trip to Jerusalem" changed?? Are the "Salutation" and the "Royal Children" still there?? Every Thursday night I used to go with friends I worked with, to the back row of the "God's" at the Theatre Royal. No matter what was on. Is it still there??? These are a "few" of my favourite things!!!

and in reply...

Hey Ian..it is the silly things that are important in our lives. All the things you mention are things missed by me too. It doesn't get foggy too many times here in Canada, but when it does I always say it is Goose Fair weather. Of course you miss your Mam...leaving her behind is one of the hardest things to do, but she made it possible for you to start a new life where you are now. Gloria and Wayne...as far back as I can remember we always used to go shopping "in town" every Saturday. First to the Victoria Market then round the shops and of course, we just had to go for a drink in one of the pubs in town. Where every-one talked to you and you always had a laugh. Happy Days.

I check out your ex-pat's page every night and love getting the up to date news. You have messages from all over the world, and I wonder what it is that people miss the most after leaving Nottingham to live abroad. Is there any-one out there who lived at Aspley and went to the Wm Crane School from 1940 to 1955?

When I lived in Nottingham I used to go with me Mam on the bus to Mansfield to the market, where we had a great time and always came back home with lots of bargains. Is the Mansfield market still there??

Know what I miss? Chips & Gravy - I'm at University Down South and was really suprised that chippies south of the Watford gap don't seem to have heard of this wonderful concoction.

and in reply...

Jayne Carrington in Australia, would you please e-mail me at judithann@cablelan.net I am in Canada and you do not know me, so don't get excited!! However, I have something I want to tell you if you get in touch.

One thing I really miss since leaving Nottingham is the sense of humour of Nottingham people. I am sure there is no place on earth with the quick wit you hear every day there. On the markets, on the buses, in the pubs. You hear it every day and always get a laugh. Here in Canada we even have to explain to the Canadians what "Are you Being Served" is all about. What do I miss the most...Pork Farm Pork Pies...The Cocked Hat pub.... Yates Wine Lodge...Fish and Chips from the Chippy....Branston Pickle...and of course English Cream cakes....Oh, my mouth is watering just thinking of these things. I'm going to put the kettle on now and make a cuppa.

My brother, who’s still in Nottingham along with the rest of my family, put me onto this wonderful site. Nottinghamians all round the world. All those people with similar memories to mine. Coleman’s!! The Last Waltz. I remember The Brit, The Boat and The Union. And the upstairs disco above a seedy pub behind Victoria Station (when it was still there.) And the one underground near Broad Marsh, and the one in the Lacemarket. Could it possibly have been called The Beachcomber?? I went to Clifton Hall, left in 69. Lived in Clifton. Worked a Saturday job at “Coats an' ‘Ats”, and vacation work at Players and Thos Forman’s. Married a Kiwi, have lived in New Zealand for 25 years but visit as opportunity permits. Love how all the buildings have been cleaned up. Always have a drink at the Bell and stand on the steps of the Council House til the security guard shoos us away. Have a tshirt saying “ay up me duck”. Will always miss mushy peas, especially at Goose Fair. Sitting here at my computer on a seriously muggy day in February feeling utterly homesick for a good freezing fog, while waiting for a bus on London Road!!

I was born in Nottingham in 1945 and lived in Cinderhill, Bulwell and Radford. Came to Aust in 1966. Went to Bulwell Catholic School (Brooklyn Road) & Peoples College Secondary Technical School (College St). Served in Nottingham City Police 1962-1966 (Pc 422 Central Division). Back in Nottm in 1977 for few weeks when my Dad died. He was Harry Mugridge, worked at Nottm University 1949-1973, and was well known in local history circles. My Aunt & Uncle (Nancye & Jim Hollis) managed Magna Carta Pub at Lowdham in the 50's (before Tommy Lawton took it over)and then owned and ran the Wheatsheaf, Muston (near Grantham). Love Aust which has been very good to me but still much fondness and memories of the Old Country and the Queen of The Midlands. Recollections of happy Saturday nights at the Palais de Danse (near the Central Market), Old Radford (now apparently almost all gone), Goose Fair, The Snackery (fish & chips & mushy peas), City Ground when it cost 4 bob to get in and ! ! a tanner for a programme, 17, 43 & 44 buses (the latter being trolley buses) and convivial evenings in too many pubs to mention. Like to hear from anyone from the old place, especially the bygone era!

Thinking of Nottingham?? Every day of my life. My name is Anne Kittridge (Taylor) and I now live in Ontario Canada. I have lived here for over 30 years, but am still a Nottingham gal at heart. I went to the Wm Crane School until the age of 15. I then worked in the office at Wm Dixon's in Houndsgate. One of my greatest pleasures is listening to Radio Nottingham on your page. Love the site and anything to do with Nottingham, I will be back.Thanks.

Great to see the old haunts on web-cam - I didn't know Wilford Lane could look so interesting!! Lived in W.Bridgeford for years and it will always be my favourite city in England - can't beat the pubs and nightlife. Still listen to the Forest games on the 'net - c'mon boys back to the Premier League!! Moved here in '99 - now if I could only 'beam' the TBI and the City Ground to Perth, life would be perfect!

Even though now I live in Perth West Australia I have read your story regarding the closure of the Odeon cinema.I can remember going from St Marys school to the opening of the Ritz I was then only twelve years old.It was a matinee but I can't remember what the name of the film was.But I can remember the man (I think his name was Jack Hellier) playing the organ as it came from out of the floor of the stage and at the time it seemed like Wonderland. The end of another Nottingham era.

I moved away to the Bay Area in 1984 after growing up in Lenton and attending Mundella Gramar school in the early 70s. I have very fond memories of Notts. Great nightlife and lots to do. I get back there every other year or so.
The web site is great, it brings back lot of old memories.
