"I spend half my week practising medicine and the other half writing and talking about it as a GP in Gloucestershire. Working on Case Notes has been a boon for both me and my patients. One of the principal aims of the programme is to keep our listeners up-to-date with the latest developments in healthcare, and to accomplish that I get to interview a wide range of specialists at the cutting edge of medicine. A rare privilege that ensures our listeners aren't the only ones to learn something new."

Light
In this episode of Case Notes Dr Mark Porter finds out how light is being used to treat everything from acne to cancer.
A weapon to fight cancer
Mark听investigates recent developments in the use of light to treat cancer.
Photodynamic therapy uses light-sensitive drugs called photosensitisers to selectively destroy tumours.
The treatment is still in the experimental stages, but researchers are increasingly confident that Photodynamic therapy will become another weapon in the arsenal against cancer and other diseases.
Beating the winter blues
Seasonal Affective Disorder is a specific type of depression that affects people at the same time each year - during the autumn and winter seasons when the daylight hours are fewer.听
Mark investigates the causes of Seasonal Affective Disorder, and the various treatments available, including light boxes which alleviate symptoms by producing doses of artificial daylight.
Hope听for acne sufferers
Consultant dermatologist Dr. Tony Chu talks about the use of a laser treatment that is offering a light at the end of the tunnel for many acne sufferers.听
Pulsed dye laser therapy uses a laser to deliver a yellow light to destroy the bacteria that causes acne, and while the treatment isn't effective for everyone, some suffers have found their acne has significantly improved or disappeared altogether.
Mark finds out if laser therapy could really help this confidence-shattering condition.
And he learns about a new infra-red light therapy that听听can slow the appearance of crows' feet and wrinkles, according to its creators.
