"I spend half my week practising medicine and the other half writing and talking about it as a GP in Gloucestershire. Working on Case Notes has been a boon for both me and my patients. One of the principal aims of the programme is to keep our listeners up-to-date with the latest developments in healthcare, and to accomplish that I get to interview a wide range of specialists at the cutting edge of medicine. A rare privilege that ensures our listeners aren't the only ones to learn something new."

Back to School
In this episode of Case Notes, Dr Mark Porter听reports on the latest approaches to dealing with the medical problems that commonly affect school age children.
Separation Anxiety What do you do when a child cries and doesn't want to go to school?
Mark Porter looks at tips for how to cope with schoolchildren worried about starting school and returning to school.
Bedwetting
For some the stresses of the classroom and playground can lead to bedwetting.
About 1 in 7 children aged five, and 1 in 20 children aged ten, are bedwetters.
Mark Porter looks at the pros and cons of the different kinds of treatments on offer, including bed wetting alarms, drugs and psychological interventions.
Itchy and Scratchy
Skin infections such as impetigo or molluscum contagiosum can rapidly spread around a class of young children.
Impetigo is caused by infection with staphylococcal or streptococcal bacteria.
It's more common when there's a skin condition such as eczema, insect bites or scratches.
Nit-picking
Few primary school pupils avoid the head louse.
It's a grey-brown, six legged wingless insect, a few millimetres long, which feeds by sucking blood from the host's scalp.
Lice move easily from head to head.
Mark Porter finds out听the best methods of removing them.
Should parents use chemical preparations, tea tree oil or a special comb?
And he'll be asking when a child with a cold and a cough should be taken to the GP and what the family doctor might be offering the young patient, now that antibiotics are not given out as freely as they once were.
