"I spend half my week practising medicine and the other half writing and talking about it as a GP in Gloucestershire. Working on Case Notes has been a boon for both me and my patients. One of the principal aims of the programme is to keep our listeners up-to-date with the latest developments in healthcare, and to accomplish that I get to interview a wide range of specialists at the cutting edge of medicine. A rare privilege that ensures our listeners aren't the only ones to learn something new."

Moorfields Eye Hospital
The oldest specialist eye hospital in the world - Moorfields in London - is celebrating its 200th anniversary.
In this episode of Case Notes Dr Mark Porter visits Moorfields to find out听more about the hospital and the eye conditions its staff deal with every day.
The retina
Sometimes the retina, the light sensitive tissue layer at the back of the eye, can become detached from the eye's inner lining, causing severe sight problems.
The surgeons at Moorfields can reattach the retina by 'freezing' it back into place while the patient is still awake;听Mark Porter finds out more about the procedure.
And he visits the Accident & Emergency department at the hospital, where the staff deal with anything from conjunctivitis to serious eye injuries every day.
Diabetic retinopathy
At least six out of ten diabetics are affected by diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes where the blood vessels of the retina are damaged,听sometimes causing permanent blindness.
With regular sight checks and careful management of their diabetes, those at risk should be able to avoid losing their sight.
The experts at Moorfields give us the lowdown on the condition.
Laser eye surgery
More and more people are turning to laser eye surgery as a way to permanently correct short sight, long sight and astigmatism.
Mark considers the questions anyone thinking about laser eye surgery should ask: Who can have it done? What are the risks? Where should you have the procedure done - and should you听choose the practitioner听by cost alone?听
Contact lenses
Some contact lens wearers are putting their sight at risk if they don't keep their lenses clean.
Mark finds out about some of the conditions lens users could face, and which steps they should be taking to protect themselves.
