"I spend half my week practising medicine and the other half writing and talking about it as a GP in Gloucestershire. Working on Case Notes has been a boon for both me and my patients. One of the principal aims of the programme is to keep our listeners up-to-date with the latest developments in healthcare, and to accomplish that I get to interview a wide range of specialists at the cutting edge of medicine. A rare privilege that ensures our listeners aren't the only ones to learn something new."

Joint replacements
Dr Mark Porter takes an inside look at joint replacements.
Hip replacements were first developed in the 1960s and revolutionised life for those with hip arthritis.
Knee joints were harder to develop but are now one of the most common operations in the country.听
Case Notes examines the newest techniques, what to expect after an operation and which joints could be replaced in the future.
Orthopedics at work
Tricia McNair visits the South West London Elective Orthopedic Centre in Epsom.
The centre is dedicated to performing hip and knee replacements, and is able to take patients who may have been rejected for surgery elsewhere.
Tricia meets the specialist team of orthopedic consultants and nurses听at what is set to become the busiest centre for joint replacements in the UK.
Hip resurfacing
Metal on metal hip resurfacing is a relatively new type of surgery that replaces diseased or damaged bone with metal without the need for a total hip replacement.
The procedure doesn't need to be repeated as often as a conventional hip replacement so it's thought to be better for younger patients.
TV chef Ainsley Harriot talks Mark Porter about his recent hip resurfacing operation.
Drug safety fears
Fears over the safety of COX-2 inhibitor painkillers have recently been reported.
COX-2 inhibitors are pain relief drugs widely听taken by people suffering from arthritis, but a recent report suggests that听they put some users at a higher risk of heart disease or stroke.
听 Case Notes meets听a patient who had been taking the drugs about her dilemma in the face of these revelations.
And Professor Rob Moots of the University of Liverpool Academic Rheumatology Unit offers advice for other听listeners who might be concerned.
