"I spend half my week practising medicine and the other half writing and talking about it as a GP in Gloucestershire. Working on Case Notes has been a boon for both me and my patients. One of the principal aims of the programme is to keep our listeners up-to-date with the latest developments in healthcare, and to accomplish that I get to interview a wide range of specialists at the cutting edge of medicine. A rare privilege that ensures our listeners aren't the only ones to learn something new."

Intensive Care
This week Dr Mark Porter visits an Intensive Care Unit.
When the 成人论坛's Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond crashed last week, he was airlifted to hospital and to the Intensive Care Unit. There, specialist staff assessed his injuries and stabilised him. When he had recovered sufficiently he was transferred to a High Dependency Unit before going on a general ward.
Today Dr Mark Porter visits the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading where the Consultant in Intensive Care, Carl Waldmann, shows him round the ICU.
Most patients are admitted to an Intensive Care Unit following certain surgical operations, or if there are complications post-operatively. Patients are also sent from Accident and Emergency. There is a high level of staffing with most patients having one-to-one nursing care, as well as dedicated consultants, physiotherapists and technicians.
Most patients are on ventilators to help them breathe and under sedation.
Research now shows that a significant proportion of patients in ICU can suffer from psychological problems following their stay in hospital. Follow-up Nurse Melanie Granger tells Mark about the work that's being done to help patients understand what happened to them in ICU, in an attempt to prevent Post-traumatic stress disorder.
Throughout the programme patients who have been through ICU will be recounting their experiences. You can hear more of their stories at . |
