Your reviews and comments for Spooks 4 Episode 2:
"Engaging, exciting and pacy without becoming an overblown, superficial piece of 24-esque television. Finally we have a series that can effectively merge exciting action, genuinely moving moments, drama and some edgy and innovative editing.
The last quarter of an hour in particular held me literally open-mouthed in front of the television. A more than credible plot matched by drama of a power and calibre that has been largely unmatched on our screens in recent years.
Great work and may the series continue in a similar vein."
BK, Bristol
"This two-parter has been a great example of all that is brilliant in Spooks: everything, from acting to writing to lighting is excellent, and the subject matter was kept in perspective and worked into a fantastic and gripping storyline.
Yet again the show manages to resonate with the times and make a good point about the work of at the same time. Strong new characters, a combination of a new and old team to explore. While et al will be missed, the series hasn't skipped a beat. Spooks is the kind of first class drama that British TV can do when it really tries!"
James Oakley, Sandy, Bedfordshire
"It's a dismal shame that the 成人论坛 are unable to know 'when it ain't broke don't fix it". This new series of Spooks marks a new low in the programme's history. After the triumphant first two series of Spooks I was captivated by realistic gritty plots, believable actors and just the right mix of drama and action.
However, the 成人论坛 has seen fit to drag this once exquisite drama down to the level of the rest of the 成人论坛 ONE rubbish. The new actors are shaky at best, the plot lines are ridiculous and I've lost all interest.
Please let this be the last Spooks series so that all the hard work done on the first two is sullied no further.
Spooks - RIP"
Stuart, Northampton
"Rarely is a series as good when cast members leave but, over and over again, Spooks proves this isn't the case. Initial disappointment has always been replaced with an instant connection to new characters and an ongoing enjoyment of the old. I've never known an hour to go so quickly."
Emma, Brighton
"The tension and excitement were racked up to unbelievable levels tonight. The plot twisted and turned throughout and I was left guessing who the mole was right up until all was revealed.
New cast are superb, really thought the show would dip after the departure of the original cast. Entertaining tension between the MI5 and agents too.
Spooks easily surpasses any other TV drama on at the moment."
Chris, London
"If it's possible, the second part of this story was even more dull, contrived, soulless and pointless than the first. Since when have members of the public been allowed inside the Grid? And told about the latest technology? Spooks always relied on its believability and relation to real life. But that now seems to have been totally forgotten in favour of sensationalism.
The writing is awful, the direction contains pointless extreme close-ups of hands or lips for no apparent reason, and the audience is hand held through the plot instead of assuming we have an iota of intelligence.
With the exception of a few good lines and their deliveries, and some good work by Rupert, Nicola and , this just proved to me that Spooks is no longer the brave, innovative, dark and layered drama it has been for three series.
I'll just stick with my DVDs of Series 1-3."
Cathy, UK
"This was the first time I've ever watched Spooks and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I found it very gripping and was shouting at the screen, hoping they would be able to stop the bomb. The way in which they scripted it was very well thought out, especially with the happening in London.
I thought it was very nice to see Martine McCutcheon on the show, showing off her talent. Unlike reviewer James Hamilton, I DO hope to see her again on the show. Maybe she and Adam could get together, that would be a great storyline."
Rheanne Phillips, Milton Keynes
"This is worse than for believability. Talk about a load of boy scouts running round like headless chickens. Even the baddies were all uglier than the good guys just to make it easier for us. What gets me is how they all take themselves so seriously. They've got no personalities, just like programmed state super zombies. Who writes this rubbish? Please hurry up and bring back New Tricks."
Ben Cord, Combe St. Nicholas, Somerset
"All I can say about this is that it's topical in so far as bombs seem to be a sad fact of life, just as dramas as soulless as this are.
Where is the food for thought, the subtlety, the empathy we should feel with the personalities of the cast?
Mind you those two young operatives certainly get about don't they? Gosh they must be fit young men.
How politically correct as well - it seems to me that all 成人论坛 dramas now must have their correct proportion of Muslims, gays, blacks, women in charge of men etc. How sad is that?
And oh dear the scene at the end. How noble. How British. How corny."
Rose Kittson, Bath
"I am thoroughly enjoying this series just as much as the previous ones, if not more. Like many of my friends, I was sceptical about replacing Tom, Zoe and Danny, but I am pleased to say the new cast is working for me.
It's a shame to hear grievances with regard to the attacks on London. This is a 'drama' about MI5. If they did not have plot lines of this sort, they wouldn't be hitting the spot."
Tom Robinson, Leeds
"Why has this programme been shown with all the terrorist behaviour that's gone on in London this year? Is it really a good idea to give terrorists any more ideas? It's in very bad taste and as it's a new series, could this not have been changed to something more suitable?"
Kerry Booth, Leicester
"I do feel like Spooks has dropped off a bit with these first two episodes. I miss Tom's quality input, though Adam is also extremely good at filling the void. Perhaps as the series develops the new team will blend more and become what the original team was.
As for people saying it isn't appropriate after 7/7, I doubt the 成人论坛 set out to offend the families of the victims of that tragedy. It's extremely likely it was filmed way in advance of those attacks occuring so why complain? I think the emotion and the seriousness of such a tragedy was dealt with a great respect. It's a fine depiction of how hard the security service have it and subsequently still makes for one of the best shows on TV at the moment.
Let's just hope that Spooks returns to its deep and understated British routes instead of continuing in the Hollywood* fashion. As another reviewer commented, an MI5 agent in that situation would have had his phone on silent!"
Jason Baldry, Norfolk
"I'm so glad Spooks is back. Once again it managed to keep me gripped until the very end. Despite the cast changes the show has managed to maintain the pace and quality that we have come to expect. I miss Tom, Zoe and Danny but I've fallen hard for Adam and Fiona, still love Harry and Ruth and the rest of the team, and Zaf is growing on me.
My only gripe is that Fiona wasn't used enough in this opening two-parter. I hope to see more of her as the series progresses. She and Adam share a unique relationship not often portrayed on television. I'd love to see more of it along with her greater involvement in the cases."
Tash, London
"Martine McCutcheon was brilliant. Chemistry between her character and Adam Carter was far better than between Adam and his on-screen wife. Will she return?"
Alison Pearson, Kent
"Adam's still not as good as Tom. Mr Penry-Jones doesn't seem to have as much authority as Matthew Macfadyen. Please don't involve any romance between Adam and Tash or anything similar, it will ruin the programme completely. I want to watch spy games not people snogging! But it is a big improvement on the last series."
Maxine Hayes, Bristol
"I think Martine McCutcheon as Tash played a great character. I think it would be a good idea to bring back Tash or a similar character as a member of the regular team. It would add a lighter character to the team and would also highlight the point made in the episode that anyone can apply for a career with the Intelligence service."
Dennis, Kent
"While the storyline was excellent, the music totally overpowered the dialogue, and I needed to strain my hearing to hear what was being said. Music of this volume was totally unnecessary and added absolutely nothing to the content of the programme."
Raymond Carter, Bexley Kent
"Another excellent episode and conclusion. I really enjoyed the interesting direction, which had an almost 'raw' feel, due to the lack of music and tight and wide shots. It took us right in and out of the action when the story called for it. All this made for another realistic episode. Good to see how far Adam would go to get things done, and a good decoy from the programme makers to point all evidence to Juliet Shaw for being the mole."
Fragments, Cambridge
"Two seconds to detonation and everyone's sitting round holding hands and looking into each others eyes! Why not bring the Carry On films* back because the writers have obviously got a flare for comedy."
Paul Bentley, West Yorkshire
"If the first two episodes are anything to go by then this is going to be a cracking series. I loved the comment tonight about the cat's tail in the socket. I've not laughed so much in ages."
David Sweeney, Edinburgh
"I was a little disappointed that they just forgot about the female bomber accomplice who evidently got away scott free."
Tom, Swindon
"I have to say I'm disappointed with the start of series 4 - as an avid follower of the first three series I have grown used to a depth of character that was entirely absent from both the terrorist and more importantly the Spooks themselves.
Even the characters with established back stories have seemed to have lost any personal drive towards a defining objective. Where is the questioning of actions? The inter-team emotion and conflict? The feeling that people under extreme pressure are close to the edge?
During a national emergency would not the (seemingly the only two) agents that MI5 have in the field have carried a gun, radio or maybe penknife? We can only be thankful that the terrorists were so willing to make easily diffusible bombs and leave them where clearly visible to our one dimensional heroes.
I'm sure Spooks fans would appreciate more attention to characters and detail, and less to filling the hour with big names."
Al H, London
"Series 4 really hit its stride with the resolution to this two-parter. If some had railed at the clumsy way in which the mole had been revealed in the preview, then those familiar with the show were surely ready to be thrown a curve ball.
I did have difficulty from the off in buying Corey Johnson* as a good guy, after his recent turn in . But what was delivered here was more high octane action alongside the trademark twists and turns.
I like Adam Carter more and more with every viewing. One minute he finds an excuse to take his shirt off. The next his ruthless streak yields results in the nick of time. And in a conclusion that was predictable, but lost little of its excitement for all that, his humanity won through. There's an edginess and smooth professionalism about him that makes him the ideal man for the job.
Spooks has always sought to marry relevant and hard-hitting issues with a touch of Bond and this episode exemplified that approach. But it's so often in the quieter moments - notably in the closing moments as Adam takes a nap in his car after the finale and the radio commentator criticises MI5 for its perceived shortcomings - that set it apart. If others believe Spooks has lost its edge, I'd beg to differ."
Adam Chamberlain, London
"More second rate drama. Where is the plot or at least one we have to think about? Where is the detailed insight and interplay of the individual characters? Where is the build up of tension and emotion. This is all so shallow. A load of villains, who we easily identify, against the good guys who continually chase round after them. It is not mentally stimulating.
Think back to the 成人论坛's dramas. Is there any comparison? Admittedly they had , but again it proves that the old pros such as in New Tricks are far more convincing and entertaining than this bland new generation who do not inspire interest."
Lindsey Doyle, Yeovil
"I got quite exhausted just watching this. Such a shame it was all so silly though. Why don't these young actors have any charisma these days and why do they all seem so humourless and take themselves so seriously? It was all action but it never gripped the imagination and it was all so obvious, just like a lot of American TV where we used to live.
In the past we used to have intelligent thought-provoking dramas where we could identify emotionally and intellectually with the characters, and where the climax came after a long period of tension and build up. This lot inspire no-one and the writing is second rate.
I felt no emotions or any sort of entertainment value at all watching this. Yes I'm in my fifties but I don't particularly want to go to bed at 9pm because there's nothing worth watching on the TV. All this stuff is for youngsters and not particularly intelligent ones at that."
Ethel Crotchet, Lyme Regis, Dorset
"I've always admired the authenticity of Spooks and its portrayal of the security service. I realise that a certain amount of artistic licence is necessary in drama, however the scene in which Adam and Zaf are chasing an American mole agent around Thames House is in my opinion extremely unrealistic. This is Thames House, come on guys has anyone ever heard of a building security lock down? This is MI5 we're talking about.
Other than that particular scene, the episode was superb! Please bare these aspects in mind as I for one would hate to see the show go down hill."
Ginge, London
"This episode was OK, but it couldn't be any worse than the car crash that was the third series.
However the team's craft is getting worse. Boy scouts might be more professional than Adam or Zaf.
But it's very good to see Anna Chancellor filling the Jenny Agutter-sized hole there's been in the series since she left."
Adam, Farnborough, Hampshire
"Hmm. Episode 1 - Monday. Episode 2 - Tuesday. Episode 3 - the following Thursday. Why kill the series so soon by confusing the audience? Stupid stupid stupid. Such a waste of a good series. Did the programme's producers agree to such an insane schedule or do we have the 成人论坛 to thank? I can't find the words for such stupidity."
Ports, London
