A Glaswegian socialist from the shipyards of Red Clydeside, Edwin has a constitutional objection to war. As a proud and vociferous member of the No Conscription Fellowship, he helps those who are appealing at local tribunals against their call-up, such as Plymouth Brethren thatcher William Fulford.

Edwin’s sincerity and ability to quote Henry Vaughn charms aristocratic Emily, even if she is not so inspired by his play Reaping the Whirlwind. His deeply-held political convictions and perceived meddling are not, however, universally welcomed in Devon.

"I don't know how I'd react - I'd probably be on Edwin's side"
