Ivan is a conscientious objector housed in the old Dartmoor Prison at Princetown which has been taken over as a Work Centre for those who refuse to fight. At the time, the Governor of HMP Dartmoor announced that the prison staff 2who remain at Princetown will no longer be wardens, but instructors, and will superintend or instruct the conscientious objectors in various tasks".
A devout Methodist, Ivan refuses to go to war on religious grounds. Despite being a skilled carpenter, the work Ivan is assigned to is typically menial and physically hard as few employers are prepared to take on "conchies", even when they were struggling to find the labour they need.
