Headmistress at the Ashburton school and wife of the firebrand vicar of St Eustace, Reverend Clarence Ogden, Jocelyn is a lynch-pin of the local community. Her standing makes her a key player in the forming of the Ashburton branch of the newly created Women's Institute.
With her son Martin a recipient of the Croix de Guerre, Jocelyn is fiercely patriotic and angered by the presence of conscientious objectors in the neighbourhood. Unable to contain her hatred of cowardly "conchies", Jocelyn is impressed by the forgiving attitude of the new schoolteacher shows towards them.
