"There is no substitute for one-to-one advice from aÌýtop medical expert and that's what we offer our callers and emailers. But for each person who calls to ask for help, someone else phones in to pass on a tip or a suggestion -Ìýit's a great programme to present."

| | | | Voice Problems
Anyone who sings, for a living or for pleasure, dreads losing their voice. Should they stop as soon as they feel a tickle in throat or carry on? If they suffer from frequent painful throats and croaky voices what help is available?
Voice Clinics
Now there are a number of clinics in hospitals around the country in which teams of ear, nose and throat specialists, speech therapists and psychologists work together to treat all kinds of problems that affect the voice.
It’s not just singers who are the patients at voice clinics. Teachers and trainers often have bad throats, chronic laryngitis or other pains that are so serious that they have to stop working.
Causes
Some of these symptoms have physical causes and others are, at root, psychological. The doctors and therapists at the voice clinics use a variety of approaches to help their patients, from breathing techniques and psychological counselling to surgery.
InÌýCheck UpÌýthis week Barbara Myers will be putting listeners’ questions about problems with their voices to ENT consultant Mr Julian McGlashan from the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham.
