Skin Cancer

In the first of the new series of the medical phone in, Check Up, Barbara Myers will be inviting listeners to call with their questions about skin cancer.听

Symptoms
Every year over 40,000 people are diagnosed with skin cancer and around 2,000 of them die. Their deaths may be avoidable as many skin cancers are curable if caught early. Signs to look out for are moles that change shape or colour, become bigger, itchy or inflamed, or that weep or bleed.

Different types of skin cancer
There are two main types of skin cancer: malignant melanoma (the most serious) and non-melanoma skin cancers known as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Malignant melanoma is common in people who are exposed to the sun in shorter and sharper bursts, such as a two-week holiday in the sun, and is also more common in younger people. Non-melanoma skin cancers are more often found in men over fifty who have worked a lot out-doors.听

Prevention
So what should you do to prevent yourself or your children getting skin cancer in the first place? Who is most at risk - if you have dark skin is it safe to assume you don't need sun cream. Are sun creams a con or cure and if you use sun beds are you safer from the sun's rays than if you don't. Discover which treatments are available by calling Check Up this week, when Barbara Myers will be putting your calls to an expert.
