Arrhythmias

In this last programme听in this series of Check Up, Barbara Myers takes listeners' calls about abnormal rhythms of the heart, or arrhythmias.

Many arrhythmias cause no symptoms and may go unnoticed; however they can lead to palpitations, which are an unpleasant awareness of the heartbeat.

Bouts of palpitations may last for seconds, minutes or even hours.

Other symptoms of arrhythmias include dizziness, fainting, chest pain and breathlessness.

Some arrhythmias can result in loss of consciousness and a small number of patients are at risk from cardiac arrest.

It is estimated that 1 in 20 of the population are managing an arrhythmia at any given time.

Are worried you have an arrhythmia? How are arrhythmias diagnosed? What treatments are available?

Discover the answers to these questions and hear advice on how to live with an arrhythmia when Barbara Myers puts your calls to Professor Peter Weissberg, consultant cardiologist at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, and medical director of the British Heart Foundation.
