Diabetes

More than two million people in the UK have diabetes. It's been estimated that another one million have the condition but don't know it. You are at risk of developing the condition if you are overweight, or have high blood pressure, or come from certain ethnic groups. Diabetes is when your body can't use glucose properly, and it is a serious disease.

Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 is the form of diabetes that usually affects people in middle age and older, many of whom are overweight. The symptoms - such as increased thirst, needing to pass water very often and extreme tiredness - develop slowly. If the condition isn't treated - sometimes by losing weight and sometimes with tablets or insulin to help the body maintain normal blood glucose levels - there can be serious medical consequences. These can include heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, circulation problems, nerve damage, and damage to the kidneys and eyes.

Pregnancy
Diabetes appears in some women when they are pregnant, and they need to be carefully monitored so that they can give birth to a healthy baby.

Children
As the British population becomes fatter more children are being diagnosed with the condition, some as young as seven. Recent research has suggested that eating a high fat diet can lead to diabetes.

If you want to know how to avoid diabetes and its complications, are worried that you may have the symptoms, or have already been diagnosed with the condition, call Check Up with your questions for Barbara Myers' guest, Dr Mark Vanderpump of the Royal Free Hospital in London.听

Contact the Programme
Check Up 听is your opportunity to ask an expert about the condition. If you have a question, contact us by calling 0870 010 0444 from 1.30pm - 3.30pm on the day of broadcast听or by emailing the programme - see 'Contact Check Up' link above.
